Lies, Cries, and One Big Prize is the 13th episode of Total Drama: Pahkitew Island and the 119th episode overall of Total Drama.
Plot
Shawn and Sky must compete for the million dollar prize with some assistance. After the host meddles with their feelings, the helpers (Dave and Jasmine) are now the hinderers. Who will get the money? One of the final two, or the helpers/hinderers?
Why It's Pure Lies, Makes You Cry, And Gets No Big Prize
- Excluding Dave and Jasmine, none of the other contestants from the season were seen rooting for the final two.
- Chris, Dave and Sky are all at their worst here.
- Shawn and Sky do not get to pick their helper. Instead, Chris brings a computer to help them decide. Shawn is okay with Jasmine, while Sky is stuck with Dave; this proves that the helpers were obviously rigged in Chris' favor.
- Sky uses Dave’s feelings so she can win the million dollars.
- The Robot Kitty burns off Dave's hair, while Sky's is unaffected.
- Dave and Shawn's friendship was pretty off in this episode.
- Chris decides to show Shawn's confessional and Sky's audition tape to Jasmine and Dave, respectively.
- When Chris showed Shawn's confessionals to Jasmine, Sky gloats at Shawn for his mistake, which is very rude and disrespectful.
- After finding out that Sky had a boyfriend at home (Keith), Dave becomes evil and tries to hurt her. He does not believe or care that Sky wanted to dump Keith before leaving for "Total Drama".
- Dave and Jasmine are assigned to hurt the final two, which the latter was reluctant about. The former, however, says it was worth it.
- When it seemed like she and Shawn were about to lose to Dave and Jasmine, while Shawn took it well, Sky threw a childish temper tantrum, which caused the mountain to collapse, and almost killed her and Shawn.
- Chris does not get punished for what he did to Sky, Shawn, Jasmine, and Dave.
- Dave gets left behind on Pahkitew Island with Scuba Bear in the final frame of the season.
- Speaking of spin-offs, excluding Leonard's participation in "The Ridonculous Race", Ella and Max appearing in an episode of "Total DramaRama", Sugar joining the main cast in the third season of the same show, and Jasmine appearing in an episode of the same show, we never see any of the "Pahkitew Island" contestants ever again.
- Ended the original Total Drama series somewhat badly, and was a rather mediocre way to end the series at the time.
- It almost killed the Total Drama series, as only spin-off shows were aired until Total Drama Island 2023 saved the franchise.
Redeeming Qualities
- The animation and voice acting are still decent as usual.
- This was the only episode of the season where Sugar does not make a physical appearance.
- Shawn, Jasmine and Chef are the only likable characters in this episode.
- After five straight seasons of having male winners in Canada (Owen, Duncan, Alejandro, Cameron, and Mike in that order), Sky becomes the first female winner in that country. However, Shawn (who won the season in the United States) also wins in the French (Canadian) version of the show.
- Because Total Drama was produced in English, it's safe to say that Sky is the official winner in Canada.
- This was the last episode to have Chris McLean as the host until the reboot series. He would be replaced by Don for "The Ridonculous Race" and he does not make an appearance in "Total DramaRama" until the episode "Broken Back Kotter", which while retaining his sadistic personality, it is notably toned down.
- Jasmine forgives Shawn after he didn't initially accept her dreams, and their relationship is reformed.
- Contrary to WIPLMYCAGNBP#14, the Total Drama Island reboot was announced in 2022 for two seasons on HBO Max, and were later aired in 2023 and 2024, so this episode is no longer the show's series finale.
- However, in every other version of the show--including the Catalan dub and the United States release of the show--"A Million Ways to Lose a Million Dollars" of "The Ridonculous Race" was the show's initial finale, as TDRR was billed as a "Total Drama" season instead of a stand-alone spin-off.
Trivia
- This was the third "Total Drama" finale to premiere in another country before its premiere Canada or the United States. In this case, "Total Drama Pahkitew Island" aired in Italy before it premiered in the United States. The first time was in "Total Drama World Tour" when Australia finished the season. The second time was in "Total Drama: Revenge of the Island" where the finale aired in France before it was aired in Canada.
Reception
The season finale was given a 6.7 Rating on IMDb.
