Liv and Maddie (titled Liv and Maddie: Cali Style in the fourth and final season) is an American sitcom on Disney Channel. The series premiered on July 19, 2013, and ended on March 24, 2017. The series has four seasons.
Plot
Liv and Maddie are identical twin teenage girls with very different personalities. Liv is a girly girl while Maddie is a tomboy. Together, they can accomplish anything.
Why It Rocks-A-Rooney
- Despite being done before, identical twin teenage girls with very different personalities are an interesting concept.
- Likable characters with distinct personalities.
- Nice acting that contains a sense of reality.
- Very well-done theme song.
- Dove Cameron, despite being a single actress, does an excellent job at portraying twins Liv and Maddie as she gives them distinct appearances and voices to the point where it seems like they're actually portrayed by twin actresses.
- Great use of shipping and love triangles.
- Unlike most modern Disney Channel sitcoms, which rely on dumb and trashy humor, this show makes good use of its humor.
- Great original songs, such as "Better in Stereo" (the theme song), "What a Girl Is", "As Long as I Have You" and "My Destiny".
- Very emotional and heartwarming three-part series finale.
- The series is filmed like a documentary with the characters talking to the audience about their opinions on various situations, which is very unique. In the final episode, it was revealed that the series was a reality series within the series, thus explaining why the characters talk to the audience.
- Great season finales, especially the two-part Season 3 finale and the three-part Season 4 finale, which is the series finale.
- Ruby is a very likable and relatable character who is a great addition to the main cast and a replacement for Pete Rooney in the final season.
- Andy Grammar guest stars in "SPARF-A-Rooney" as himself and sings his popular song "Honey, I'm Good".
- It is unique how the first three seasons take place in Wisconsin while the fourth and final season takes place in California.
Bad Qualities-A-Rooney
- Some of the characters can be annoying and unlikable, such as Todd Stetson and Skeeter.
- Almost every end of the title of each episode has the words "-A-Rooney".
- Benjamin King who portrays Pete Rooney left the series after Season 3 and didn't return for the three-part series finale.
- Season 4 isn't quite as good as the first 3 seasons.
- Some occasional weak jokes.
- Despite being good, the acting can get a bit exaggerated and unrealistic at times.
- The shipping and love triangles can get a bit annoying.
Reception
On Common Sense Media, Emily Ashby gave the series' quality a rating of 3/5 stars, describing it as a "jovial family sitcom" and applicable for ages seven and up. Liv and Maddie was credited for its "comical spin" on common family issues like sibling rivalry.
