Love Is Blind is a dating reality television series created by Chris Coelen and produced by Kinetic Content which premiered on Netflix on February 13, 2020, as part of a three-week event. The show is based on a social experiment in which single men and women look for love and get engaged before really meeting in person.
Why Love Isn't Truly Blind
Overall
- For starters, the premise of the show is based too much around pretty privilege. If anything, this show confirms it's a real thing that happens in the real world. Not to mention that the basis of the show isn't all that interesting or unique compared to other reality shows.
- Also, it doesn't even count as a social experiment because of them only casting "pretty" people. If they casted unconventionally attractive people, the experiment would've worked better.
- In fact, science also proves being attractive is a large part of a long-term relationship. However, we're not saying that relationships should be based on physical attraction alone, it's also the personality that counts as well.
- It sets unrealistic standards for relationships, since the producers think that relationships only happen in a matter of days, thus leaving 26% of the marriages successful, this percentage counts towards marriages who have broken up after the show.
- Some of the hosts are boring and mediocre, such as Nick Lachey. Let alone the fact that he's in almost every reality dating show, such as Perfect Match, which is, coincidentally, another show from Netflix made in the 2020s.
- Most of the people they casted are shallow and basic, making it very boring unless drama is on the screen. It's also shown that multiple contestants on Love Is Blind has little to no mental maturity for a relationship. Cole from Season 3 was shown to be a man-child on several occasions.
- The show feels like a rip-off to Married at First Sight, another reality show made by Kinetic Content where most of the contestants have broken up or didn't make their match, noticing a pattern here?
- The logo is just as basic as any other reality show and not interesting at all.
- Sometimes, the romantic scenes where the contestants are flirting feel jarring and disingenuous, which is a problem with many reality shows.
- Many people thought the dresses from the series were ugly.
- The couples are constantly bickering, making it not everyone's cup of tea. It can also be too much at times, similar to Dance Moms.
- There are intense music for some scenes, especially when some of them don't really need it.
- When the reunion scenes happen, they always feel very awkward knowing how much of the couples have failed overall.
- It seems hypocritical the fact that they make fun of dating apps, while on the other hand, those dating apps are very similar to the concept of the show itself.
- Overall, it's a shallow attempt at a social experiment that was doomed from the start by casting people who are conventionally attractive.
Season 3
- Matt, while we understand his trauma, he needs to listen to therapists and needs to talk about his trauma to them. It's been shown multiple times that he cannot handle a relationship due to his past girlfriend and her cheating on him with another man.
- Sometimes, Bartise has an on-and-off relationship with Nancy. Sometimes he likes her, while sometimes he doesn't. It could be confusing to viewers whether they'll get married or not.
- The traditional values that SK's mom and the woman who runs the shop told to Raven comes off as misogynistic. However, it may be edited to seem that way, but who knows?
- Zanab and Cole's relationship was doomed to fail from the start.
- Zanab kept nitpicking and taking control over Cole's dinner that he was trying to make for her, when Cole was just doing it to show his affection towards Zanab. Unsurprisingly, they never got together in the end.
- Speaking of Cole being a man-child on WLIB #4, he hit her with a toy guy while she was making chicken.
- Cole is also seen as a hypocrite. In episode 9 when Cole was telling Zanab to stop criticizing him, he also kept making fun of her, calling her "bipolar" and "about to blow". Overall, he's been very childish throughout this season. But we're not saying Zanab is perfect, either.
- And if that wasn't enough, Zanab was a hypocrite as well. On their wedding day, she said he insulted her, critiqued her, and single-handedly shattered her self-confidence, despite her doing the same thing to Cole.
- As if Cole's reputation wasn't ruined enough, Zanab, in the reunion episode, he said he criticized and nitpicked her body.
Season 4
- Jackie is very toxic towards Marshall, saying how he's too emotional, making her hypocritical since she was also sad in hard times, as well.
- With Paul and Zach, Irina is disgusted by one while she liked the other even though they look exactly the same.
- Speaking of Irina, she seems to be more interested than winning over someone else than rather finding love.
- She is also the most unlikable person this whole season.
- She also made herself the victim, when in reality it was her fault she forgot Zach's birthday.
- Micah is also an unlikable contestant on this show, except he's more unopen about it.
Redeeming Qualities
- The first season of the show wasn't as bad as the other seasons, but even that's a low bar.
- Love Is Blind is known for it's drama, which can make it a show that you love to hate or a guilty pleasure.
- There are some heart-wrenching scenes that don't feel fake and more genuine than others.
Season 3
- SK understands where Raven is coming from with her values, which was a good moment in episode 8.
- Brenda and Alexa didn't have as much fights as the other couples this season. Surprisingly enough, they are still together as of March 2023. And overall, they're great and funny people.
- Speaking of good people, SK was a great addition to Season 3.
- Some of the parents are sweet, such as Colleen's parents.
- Cole criticized Zanab, saying that she kept making him feel inferior, and was a good critique on his part.
- Zanab also critiqued him on his wedding day. However, both of them deserved to be critiqued for their actions and hypocrisy.
- Raven's traditional Nigerian dress looked amazing.
Season 4
- Jackie can still have her funny moments at times, even though she can still be toxic.
Reception
While it has a 6.2/10 on IMDb and similar to Velma, many people hate-watching it for the drama, the show has still been panned by audiences and critics alike.
