Love Live! Sunshine!!! (ラブライブ! サンシャイン!!) is a Japanese anime musical television series directed by Kazuo Sakai at Sunrise. The series is the first spin-off of the Love Live! franchise and aired from July 2, 2016 to September 24, 2016. A second season aired from October 7, 2017 to December 30, 2017.
Plot
Season 1
The girls of Uranohoshi Girls' High School are swept into idol fever, wanting nothing more than to become the next-best School Idol group. And they plan to do just that. Chika Takami brings together eight of her classmates to form Aqours, their own idol group.
Season 2
After failing in the preliminary tournament of the previous Love Live, the members of Aquors have rededicated themselves to succeeding both as idols and as saviors of their school, making sure their home will never be taken away. But Mari learns some terrible news about their upcoming school open house event and it seems like all of their efforts will be for naught. Chika and her friends must find some way to preserve their school and carry on as idols. Either way, it looks like they'll need a miracle to get through this, fortunately, from μ's to Aqours, miracles are what idols do best.
Good Qualities
- The show (unlike the original) is a faithful screen adaptation of the Aqours' story from formation to success.
- A lot of good characters such as:
- Chika Takami, the center of Aqours and the main protagonist of the anime adaptation.
- Yoshiko Tsushima (one of the first-year students), is also very likable and one of the group's smart heads.
- Mari Ohara, is also being the most cheerful in the group, but also tries to make many, many jokes.
- The Saint Snow duo are also very likable despite being rivals to Aqours, and unlike A-RISE in the original show, they also got a post-show song and loads of merchandising.
- Incredible voice acting.
- The animation might be stunning for any anime show airing around that time.
Bad Qualities
- The show's English dub is bad for several reasons:
- NIS America, the original show's North American licensor probably didn't license this one due to the fact that costs regarding the distribution of Sunshine!! caused the show's rights to go to Funimation. This dub is the first one to use a Dallas-based talent pool rather than the LA pool that NIS used in the original show.
- The dub also suffered from writing issues regarding translating the dialogue from Japanese to English.
- The English dubs of NijiGaku and Superstar!! mainly fix these problems that Funimation had with Sunshine!! when it was dubbed.
- Whenever, anyone says Yoshiko's full name or first name, she might response with "Please call me Yohane!" which might disrupt her fallen angel persona.
- The show (as well as Aqours) was partially hated by several fans who liked the original show such as being called a "copycat" of µ's. However, by the time the anime concluded, the group was later likable.
