Lucky Gun is an episode from the Doraemon 1979 anime, it is the 10th episode of the 1979 series so far.
Plot
Nobita has some bad luck so Doraemon gives him a gun which shoots red bullets (actually bursts of light) for good luck and black bullets for bad luck, but no way of deciding which you get. Cowardly Nobita has 4 others try it first and they all get good luck. A little boy (Shizuka in other version) takes the gun and shoots Nobita with a black bullet and he gets all bad luck.
Why It's Unlucky Instead (Bad Qualities)
- The concept of having a gun for shooting yourself to have either luck or bad luck is interesting, but the problem is that this episode execute this concept poorly since it's mostly an episode where both Doraemon and Nobita ask for their friends if they want to trying the lucky gun but it's goes badly for Nobita, making this episode being mean spirited and lead the problem below.
- Much like most of the first episode of the 1979 series, there's a lot of animation errors, especially when Doraemon get hand (see BQ#3 for more information)
- In one scene of the episode, you can see that when Doraemon had the Lucky Gun in his hands, he had real hands for a second, which is extremely weird since he doesn't have these realistic hands in all the other episodes and all of his appearence, although it's at least only for that scene.
- It is the first bad episode of the entire franchise, since the 1973 series is now lost and we can't see if there's any worst episode from the 1973 series sibce it had been lost media now.
- It is a bit of a torture episode of Nobita since he had bad luck at the beginning and he get the black bullet, which mean that he will had an even worst bad luck, and Doraemon doesn't really care since he say at the end that he had bad luck this day but doesn't trying to help him getting more luck, although this might possibly be the fault of Nobita since he was scared to shooting himself but it's justifiable since it's look like a real gun too.
- Not to mention that in the end, we can clearly see Nobita being cold and being sick, which make everything worst.
- Like most early episodes from the 1979 series, the ending feel like it was rushed and make the episode end on a cliffhanger.
- Doraemon is somewhat unlikable to Nobita for the most parts, as for exemple, when he get the Lucky Gun, he say that the black bullet is bad luck but in a scary way to scaring Nobita, or when he get angry to Nobita when he doesn't shoot himself due to being scared.
Good Qualities
- It's can still be funny to watch, despite being a bit of a bad episode, especially the fact that the episode isn't too bad but mediocre.
- The animation is still good for it's time, but the problem is that there's a lot of animation errors, most notably when Doraemon get realistic hands.
- The concept of having a gun that give you either luck or bad luck is a really great concept, even for Doraemon standards, even though it's was unfortunately poorly executed due to all the issue explained before.
- Despite being a bit unlikable, Doraemon is still likable for the most parts but for some parts of the episode, he wasn't that likable unfortunately, despite that he still isn't at his absolute worst.
Reception
It's had a score of 5,9/10 in IMDb.
Trivia
- This episode had a remake episode in the 1979 anime itself.
- This episode has become a dark-ish meme due to Nobita pointing a gun to his head like commiting himself to death and Doraemon tells him to "pull the trigger", until it spreads through the internet creating multiple same meme about it.
