MLB Power Pros 2008 is a 2008 baseball game developed by Power Pros Production and published by 2K in North America and Konami in Japan for the Wii, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2. As the predecessor to MLB Power Pros as an installment in the Power Pros series to positive reviews. but nevertheless, the game unfortunately was a commercial failure. it is also the last Power Pros game to be released in North America until WBSC: eBASEBALL Power Pros in 2023 as well as the last MLB Power Pros in North America.
Why It's Powerful
- The art style and character designs look cute and appealing.
- Likable characters such as the main character (who is called Chief by Marvin), Marvin, Sittch, Frank, Lucy, etc.
- Decent and enjoyable gameplay.
- Deep MLB Life mode. you can have your player play golf, watch movies, play videogames, rest, practice alone, buy houses and cars, etc. This career mode is very underrated just like the game itself and it’s comparable to sixth generation era Madden NFL superstar mode.
- Decent graphics.
- In the Wii version you can play as your Miis (Although that's only available for Wii Remote mode).
- You can create your own teams through arrange mode and season mode for Expansion mode.
- The story in Success mode (Even though it's short.) is decent.
- Heartwarming success mode endings. Such as beating the GalaxySharks in the last game in the season where your player's brother Gil, trips over and gets hurt causing an injury because of that. Goldman, the greedy GalaxySharks owner. fires Gil. After that. It is revealed that Sittch is Goldmans secret spy. Leading Sittch to join the GalaxySharks before facing them in the championship.
- Overall, it's an underrated MLB game.
Bad Qualities
- The Success mode's difficulty is really hard.
- Jonathan can be considered an unlikable, mean-spirted, unsportsmanlike, mean popular boy who is a showoff to impress Lucy.
- The main character in Success mode is a butt-monkey.
- The only way to create players is by creating them in Success mode. To add salt to the wound, you have to beat Success mode with that player.
- The shops items are overpriced, what's worse that you barely earn power points (yes, the shop currency.) even after beating success mode, or playing a simple game but you can still earn power points in home run derby mode but it's still grindy even MLB Power Pros, You earn 6000 power points after beating success mode, although this may make the game more challenging but still.
- The Nintendo DS version is extremely flawed. There’s a lot of features that appears on the PlayStation 2 and Wii but not on this port, such as:
- MLB Life
- Shop
- Success mode
- The game lacks PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ports despite releasing 1 and year and two year(s) ago respectively.
- Releasing a game for the PlayStation 2 in 2008 is too late, because the PS3 had been out for a lengthy amount of time.
Reception
The game received positive reviews from critics and gamers but mixed reviews from critics on the PlayStation 2 version. But still positive gamer reviews for PlayStation 2 and Wii.
