MTV (originally an initialism of Music Television) is an American cable television channel, launched on August 1, 1981. Based in New York City, it serves as the flagship property of the Paramount Media Networks division of Paramount Global, also headquarters in New York City.
Why It Used To Be Our MTV
- It was the world's very first 24-hour all-music video television channel.
- Its logo was very creative.
- It was one of the earliest TV channels in full stereo sound.
- The network helped further merge radio stations with television.
- Awesome theatrical feature films made from their MTV Films division, especially Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and the 2011 remake of 1984's Footloose.
- Like the most successful video gaming console, the Nintendo Entertainment System, MTV became one of the most iconic 1980s icons.
- It had tons of music video themed shows, like MTV Unplugged, Total Request Live and MTV First.
- It aired award shows like MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and MTVU Woodie Awards.
- It's sister channel, VH1, which focused on the lighter, softer side of popular music.
- Hilarious, zany, laugh-filled original sitcoms, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, George Lopez, Faking It, The Ben Stiller Show, The Andy Dick Show, Warren the Ape and it's iconic animated TV show, Beavis and Butt-Head.
- They had it's original cartoon TV shows, especially Beavis and Butt-Head, Liquid Television, Celebrity Deathmatch and Clone High.
- It's iconic cartoon TV show, Beavis and Butt-Head, was not only MTV's most-watched program, but one of the most successful adult-oriented animated shows, as well.
- It spawned music genre video games, as well as Beavis and Butt-Head video games.
Bad Qualities
- In its early years, the network was accused of having a racial bias in music selection. The worst offender of this issue is when they initially refused to play Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". Allegedly, the network made a lousy excuse for it, claiming that they wanted to play Jackson's more rock oriented track "Beat It" first.
- To be fair, the network was initially rock-oriented music but added more genres as the years progressed.
- Its first theatrical features film, Joe's Apartment, was utterly disgusting.
- Luckily, its second theatrical feature film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, was a major improvement.
- They went slightly downhill during 1996-2009 with the launch of MTV2 in August of 1996, them gradually showed fewer and fewer music videos and around 2005, there were very little music videos or other music related content by then. However, it's no where near as bad as the decline in 2010 onwards as they completely removed the Music Television brand despite the network originally being about music and most notably milking Ridiculousness to death and letting it take over it's schedule by airing it nonstop, thus, making the network completely losing it's purpose and has no plans of coming back to it's old roots any time soon.
- Even during the network's golden age, they still had many awful and/or mediocre shows, including 16 and Pregnant, Teen Mom, True Life, Parental Control, Jersey Shore, The Real World, The Brothers Grunt and Headbanger's Ball.
- Even back when the network was great, it showed some awful music videos. They also supported popular music artists who were often slammed by critics and music elitists.
