The Magnavox Odyssey is a console by Magnavox. It is the first commercial console, released in 1972.

Why It's An Odyssey Indeed

  1. It was the first home video game system ever.
  2. In addition to pointer 1#, it was also the first console to have a light gun, which was very impressive for the time.
  3. Very long TV cable to compensate controller's short wires.
  4. Very durable, even compared to modern consoles.
  5. The console managed to get around the fact that technology back then was limited by having games that are played by putting an overlay on the screen of the TV, rather than having a game for each cartridge.
  6. While the games were limited, they were pretty fun for early 1970s standards.

The Only Quality That Got Lost During The Odyssey

  1. A modern player definitely will not see the console as good anymore, because gaming standards have increased significantly since the late 1970s or so.
