Make It Pop is a Canadian musical comedy television series created by Thomas W. Lynch and Nick Cannon that aired on Nickelodeon from March 26, 2015, to August 20, 2016. The series stars Megan Lee, Louriza Tronco, Erika Tham, and Dale Whibley.

Premise/Plot

Make It Pop follows Sun Hi, Jodi, and Corki around Mackendrick Prep, a boarding school, who form a high school K-pop-inspired band called XO-IQ, with the help of Caleb, and find music, mischief, love, and friendship.

Bad Qualities

  1. This was a failed attempt for Nick Cannon to make a kids' show for Nickelodeon.
  2. The characters are VERY cliched.
    • Sun Hi is the cliched quirky and free-spirited girl.
    • Jodi is the fashionista.
    • Corki is the nerdy girl of the XO-IQ.
    • The central antagonist, Valerie, is the cliched mean girl, also known as the Alpha Bitch.
  3. Depending on your view, the acting can get a little bland.
  4. False advertising: The show promoted that it is a K-pop show, but it is not a K-pop show, since barely any of the characters speak Korean, even though One of the main characters, Sun-Hi is Korean. It is just a K-pop-inspired show, with a high school setting, with the music being teen pop.
  5. This only lasted for 2 seasons with 40 episodes in total making it very short-lived.
  6. The plot, while not the worst thing about this show, it's just cliched school drama but with a K-Pop gimmick.
  7. The writing falls extremely flat.
  8. Many people consider it an insult to K-pop culture because they barely have any male Asians in the show.
    • Speaking of which, in a Reddit post, a user asked one of the producers "Will there be an Asian guy in it?" Then, the producer infamously wrote "Nope! Never! Asian Guys in my show, not gonna happen!" which is very racist!
      • Heck, even the co-creator of the show Thomas W Lynch called the producer out on this decision!
  9. The show is appropriating K-pop culture.

Good Qualities

  1. The acting is decent.
  2. Despite being cliched, the 3 main protagonists are decent and their friendship is very heartwarming.
  3. The dance choreography and the K-pop songs they have are good.
  4. Having a K-pop band in a high school was a very good idea, even if it's executed poorly.
  5. It's one of the more tolerable Nickcoms.
  6. It's one of the many sitcoms not to have a laugh track.
  7. There are some likable characters.
  8. Some passable episodes.
