Mario Strikers Charged (known as Mario Strikers Charged Football in Europe) is a 2007 sports game developed by Next Level Games and published by Nintendo for the Wii. It is a sequel to Super Mario Strikers for the GameCube.
Why It's Supercharged
- This serves as one of the most anticipated sequels in the series, not only the Mario franchise but also in different video game franchises, even for a spin-off; which will explain all the details below.
- Instead of just using a regular soccer ball, this game uses a metal ball that starts weak, but with every pass and shot taken, gets more powerful.
- Great selection of characters this time around, with Bowser Jr, Diddy Kong, and even Petey Piranha appearing as unlockable characters.
- Good stage selection, such as Galactic Stadium, Crystal Canyon (despite the infamous laser that can disintegrate captains and sidekicks at the start of the match or after scoring the goal), The Dump (although a bit gross-out), and The Wastelands. For fans of Super Mario Strikers, all the courses from that game have been ported over to this game.
- Great soundtrack, with some highlights being the menu music, Crystal Canyon, Stormship Stadium, Road to the Striker Cup, and the postgame music.
- Every captain and sidekick has their theme song for when they are introduced as the home team or score a goal.
- Perhaps the most memorable tracks are Wario's polka theme, Waluigi's bluegrass theme, (both of which are hilarious), and Luigi's flamenco theme (which is cool).
- Every captain and sidekick has their theme song for when they are introduced as the home team or score a goal.
- Rather than your team consisting of the 3 same sidekicks, you now get to choose who your partners are, each with their strengths, weaknesses, and special shots.
- Each captain and sidekick has different roles like offensive characters who can knock the ball faster, defensive characters who can intercept balls, and playmakers who can pass and move quickly.
- Striker Times is a nice concept on real-life sports news, as each one feels fun to read whether you win or lose.
- Speaking of which, it resembles the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS, thus making a decent-looking easter egg.
- The items are fairly balanced, with the Chain Chomp and Star mainly only given to the losing team. There is also a super ability for every captain, such as growing giant (Mario and Luigi), barricading themselves from others (Waluigi), shrinking players to make them slower (Bowser Jr.), and temporarily removing players from the field (Peach and Diddy Kong).
- Each captain has their super abilities, like intercepting with Daisy's Crystal Smash, making Mario or Luigi giant or Wario making flatulence, which is hilarious.
- Every team captain can perform a Mega Strike, potentially leading to either 3 to 6 goals.
- Additionally, every animation before the move is performed is awesome and this one never pads out time.
- It has an online play mode, but it was discontinued on May 30, 2014.
- However, it can be hacked with Wiimmfi.
- Striker Challenges is a mode that can tackle missions to get cheats for Domination Mode.
- For example, removing Skill Shots and Mega Strikes, turning off hazards, or even keeping the ball charged.
- Unlike the Boom Booms in Mario Sports Superstars and Mario Strikers: Battle League (which both came out 10 and 15 years respectively), the CPU AI for the Kritters is clever and smart when it comes to blocking shots.
- This is why players do this trick called "Goal Camping" when the player is ahead by at least 1 point and hangs out at the goal with the ball, due to Kritter’s smart goalie AI. However, the problem with it is that it is TOO good to the point where it’s unfair, so it’s only highly recommended to CPU opponents and not real human player opponents.
- The character’s goal celebrations are enjoyable to watch, most memorable celebrations are Wario’s and Waluigi’s, which are just hilarious (such as Wario giving a thumbs up while in slo-mo and Waluigi doing "Crotch chops"); Yoshi’s, which are very cute; Peach does hip shakes, Daisy being "Hot stuff", Petey does limbos, and Bowser imitating like The Simpsons' Mr. Burns, and even the sidekicks have their goal celebrations with their theme tracks.
- They even got their entrance animations, especially Wario's where he belly flops on the ground after humming his theme.
- Despite being mean-spirited, the losing animations can be hilarious to watch such as Luigi making a "Death glare" and Yoshi imitating that he is going to fight back against the opposing team, which can depend on their opinion.
- Players can play past courts from Super Mario Strikers, especially the foggy Pipeline Central. Not to mention, they are all playable at the start.
- The graphics are amazing to look at, even sceneries.
Bad Qualities
- You cannot use a Pro or GameCube controller. This might be because when defending against Megastrikes, you must use the Wii Remote's pointer, which the GameCube or Pro controllers don't have.
- Sadly, this is Princess Peach's only flanderization in the game, where she becomes a stereotypical diva who occasionally throws tantrums when she loses. Fortunately, she is redeemed in Super Mario Galaxy.
- Also, she is massively redeemed in Mario Strikers: Battle League, where her personality goes back to her original self and doesn't behave that way in said game.
- The game can be too difficult sometimes, most notably the Crystal Cup against Diddy Kong, which can be considered unfair for some players. The Striker Cup matches can be unforgiving, especially against Petey Piranha. However, it is possible to win those; it's just that it can be too difficult to beat them.
- Since the Nintendo WFC was discontinued on May 30, 2014, online play can no longer be performed without hacking.
- Some mediocre or bad stages, such as The Sand Tomb or Thunder Island.
- While a decent stage, Crystal Canyon is mean-spirited at the start (not counting the entrance animations), where it disintegrates one or two teammates using a laser before starting a match. Yes, even their captains can get disintegrated before the match.
- There is an error in both Thunder Island and Crystal Canyon; when Captains are knocked out or disintegrated by obstacles, they suddenly appear in their respective losing animations.
- Another error is that when Wario fails to land in Stormship Stadium while bellyflopping, he would have gotten hurt instead of surviving.
- Monty Mole would have gotten hurt from the propeller blades while digging instead of surviving in his victory animation.
- Captains never shut up during the match, especially Wario's "Give me the ball!"
- Wario's Gas Mask has one laughable line: Waluigi telling him to change his pants.
- In The Vice and The Wastelands, there is a pointless scene where the machine explodes and spews sparkles after the players score a goal. This has nothing to do with soccer and pads out time.
- The losing animations are infamous for being mean-spirited, especially Peach, Daisy (they take out their anger on their teammates), and Wario (who tries to blow himself up with a Bob-omb; not only that, but he destroys the glowing metal soccer ball in frustration, only for him to knock himself unconscious).
- While Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Petey Piranha attacking or hurting their teammates (or the latter's case, he devours an opposing team's teammates and spits them out) is excusable since all of them are meant to be tough and mean, Daisy and Diddy Kong have no reason to act out-of-character since they are both good-natured characters.
Trivia
- This is the only game where Shy Guy shows actual facial expressions despite wearing a mask.
- This is also Shy Guy's second appearance removing the mask by accident, the first being Mario Power Tennis.
- All the Mega Strikes, except Petey Piranha's, are seen in the intro.
