Mario Tennis Aces is a sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. An entry in the Mario Tennis series, it was released worldwide on June 22, 2018.
Why It's A Service Ace
- Loads of content, which is like Mario Power Tennis, another good Mario Tennis game.
- The game overall is a major improvement over its prequel released for Wii U. This game even saved Mario from lackluster spin-offs, like Mario Party 9, 10, and Mario Sports Superstars.
- New mechanics which pay off for a more advanced and fun tennis game.
- Amazing story mode where even the unpopular but beloved Waluigi is important to the plot, which made fans happy.
- Outstanding graphics.
- All-new characters, with the particular highlights being Spike, Chain Chomp, Fire Piranha Plant, and last but certainly not least, Pauline.
- Speaking of Pauline, this is the first time she's a playable character, thanks to her popularity in Super Mario Odyssey.
- Instead of using a stock racket, you can finally use different rackets in the story mode, which can vary in gameplay because of the durability.
- The soundtrack is phenomenal. In fact, it can give you the feeling that it was composed by many musical geniuses.
- Good boss battles. You even fight a counterpart of Eyerok known as the Snow Ogre.
- The new stages to play in are actually fun, and they aren't re-skins like it's predecessors, either.
- Online mode is finally back, and you can choose to play whoever you want, which is good so you can see if their Wi-Fi is good or not.
- You can actually get in game outfits for playing online, which is a nice addition, such as Mario's classic outfit which appeared in the main series.
- Good replay value for a 2018 sports game.
- The game’s arcade-like gameplay is very fun, intense and even addictive.
- It is extremely balanced and properly suited for a Mario sports game.
- It is the first game that appeared in Nintendo's Game Trials Programme, which from August 7th to August 14th. Players even had the ability to download the full game (for free) from there.
Bad Qualities
- Like any Mario game, some of the boss battles are hit or miss.
- Sometimes the Toads commentate non-stop during the game, which can be really aggravating unless you can turn it off in the settings.
- Lackluster ending in the Adventure Mode. Instead of everyone celebrating Luigi coming back, they just talked about how abusing power is wrong, which is unfitting for a Mario game.
- Speaking of the Adventure Mode, while amazing, it's kinda short. In fact, you can beat in just a few hours.
- Also, the cutscenes as of version 3.0.0 use recycled voice lines (Mario games are guilty for this nowadays) that don't fit with what's happening on-screen. In the opening cutscene, Waluigi can be heard saying, "He walks funny" (referring to Bowser in Power Tennis' intro) to Wario with no one else present, while another cutscene has Mario devastated over Luigi being possessed by Lucien...while calling out to him in the happiest way possible (reused from the Mario & Luigi games).
- There could be a better way to have proper dialogue like the ones from Super Mario Sunshine, since that one has better voice acting.
- There is an error in the new intro, before Luigi touches the Lucian racket, Wario and Waluigi yells at Luigi for nearly touching it by accident, even though it is Toad who yell at him in the original.
- A few online matches can be laggy, due to your opponent having low Wi-Fi.
- People say that Swing Mode is rather gimmicky and obscure.
- Lack of customization with the rackets, like how you can customize karts in Mario Kart.
- The CPU's AI can be really dumb most of the times, which makes the game easier for the player.
- This, along with several other decent games like Splatoon 3, Nintendo Switch Sports (which both came out 4 years later), and Kirby Star Allies was a victim of the infamous "Release Now, Finish it Later" or "Service games" approach when it first came out.
Reception
Mario Tennis Aces received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.
