MediEvil 2 is the sequel to the original MediEvil, released near the end of the PlayStation's lifespan on April 21, 2000 in Europe and May 9, 2000 in North America.
Plot
Taking place in the year 1886, in Victorian London, Sir Daniel reawakens after being revived by Lord Palethorn, who aims to obtain every page of the legendary Zarok's spellbook and conquer London.
Why It Rocks
- This sequel takes place 500 years after the original game, in 1886 London.
- The game introduces a few new characters to the series; Professor Hamilton Kift, Whinston the ghost, Egyptian mummy Kiya, new antagonist Lord Palethorn, and his henchmen Mander and Dogman.
- There are some new, more modern weapons for Sir Dan to use, like a pistol and a Gratling gun.
- There is also a new form Dan can use, Dan-Hand. This form allows Dan to enter small areas normal Dan cannot access.
- The game gives Daniel some new outfits to wear, like a purple Victorian dinner suit, and a golden suit of armor.
- Several new levels to traverse through, like Whitechapel, Cathedral Spires, Wulfrum Hall, and the Museum.
- A few great boss fights, against Tyrannosaurus Wrecks, the Count, the Ripper and Iron Slugger.
- The game continues with the first game, with Lord Palethorn using Zarok's spell book to revive undead monsters for a new army.
- The game has elements of time travel, with Dan using it to prevent Kiya's death from The Ripper, and the ending where Dan goes back to his own time.
- The game has a good amount of humor, such as Dan's head getting taken off by a bird.
- Just like the first game, the sequel has good combat with the weapons Dan uses.
- Decent graphics (even if they look a bit dated).
- The soundtrack is okay, having good songs like The Freakshow and The Ripper.
Bad Qualities
- During development, the game was originally going to have a new protagonist, Dan's descendant, Sir Henry Fortesque. The idea, sadly, was dropped, and Sir Daniel returned instead.
- The title is slightly off, as the game is set in 1886, centuries after the "Medival" era has already ended.
- Kiya, Dan's love interest, is very bland, as she only has a few lines in the game and has very little character.
- In fact, most of the new characters are bland. Nothing is revealed about Winston, such as how he became a ghost. His Cockney accent is also annoying.
- Despite Dogman and Mander being Palethorn's right-hand men, they don't serve much of a purpose, a wasted opportunity.
- Unlike the first game, if Dan uses up the entire rejuvination fountain, it will not come back. This makes it harder for him to refill his health meter.
- Instead of Jason Wilson reprising his role as Sir Daniel, the knight is now voiced by Marc Silk. Dan's new voice is higher pitched, nasally, and annoying to hear.
- This game is significantly harder than the original, with more enemies to fight, the addition of fall damage, and the above mentioned problem with the health fountain.
- The plot and story is a bit rushed and generic, making the overall game weaker than the better written original game.
- The North American cover, compared to the cool looking PAL cover, looks generic.
