Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is a video game developed by Capcom and released exclusively for the portable console PlayStation Portable . It is a remake of the first game of the series Mega Man X , originally released for Super Nintendo in 1993.
Why It Rocks
- Revamped graphics and gameplay. The graphics look great even by PSP standards and the gameplay is still good.
- Remastered soundtrack that still sound great.
- Characters (especially bosses) were given voice acting and they are an improvement over the voice acting of Mega Man X4, X5, X6 and X7. The biggest example among people is Mark Gatha as X, who does an excellent job voicing him, maybe even better than in X8.
- The controls are solid.
- Once you finish the game you can unlock a special game mode in which you play as Vile, X and Zero's archnemesis. Vile has interesting gameplay in which he has an arsenal of weapons in his body that can be upgraded as you defeat each boss. For example, he can be upgraded with homing fists, flamethrower legs, or tornado cannons and its quite a variety of upgrades with their own unique traits.
- Some levels were completely redesigned and changed which is a nice touch.
- Power up locations were changed as well.
- An unlockable OVA film called "Day of Sigma" can be played once the game is finished, it is a prequel to the events of Mega man X.
- The game features a more balanced difficulty than the original SNES game.
- The Japanese opening
Bad Qualities
- Mark Gatha as X can be annoying at times. Despite this, he still does an excellent job voicing him, especially when he's not shouting.
- In addition to X's voice, he will always shout the weapon's name loudly (except X-buster).
- Much like in the original version, you can't save the Hadouken.
- Zero is no longer a playable character, much like in X4-X8, where he's playable in these, yet he's not in this remake. Which is a tad bit disappointing.
- Some remixes sound inferior to the ones in the original.
- In Vile mode, you cannot dash due to the Dash button being used for the bomb button. The game compromises this with a faster walk speed upgrade but it doesn't have the same charm as dashing around the stages.
- Also in that same mode, the music in the 8 Maverick stages is always the Vile mode highway theme which is quite lazy and was a missed opportunity to include more remade music.
- Sigma is flanderized into making doing and having evil happen as his choice instead of due to the Maverick Virus.
Trivia
- Just like Mega Man Powered Up, the game didn't sell very well. Both had scrapped sequels due to this that would have remade other Mega Man and Mega Man X titles like Mega Man X2.
- This is the first and therefore only game in the Mega Man X series where Vile is playable.
