Mega Man is a video game in the eponymous series that was developed by Freestyle and released exclusively in North America by U.S. Gold for the Sega Game Gear in 1994.
Plot
Mega Man's mission is to overthrow Dr. Wily's sinister plot to destroy humankind. For that, Mega Man will need to crush Wily's humanoid henchmen to move on to the Formidable Fortress.
Good Qualities
- Good graphics for a Game Gear game, as they are incredibly detailled and colorful, and the sprites ressemble that of the NES games but adding way more details to make them look even better.
- Solid controls, even for a Mega Man game, despite being a little unresponsive at times.
- Decent soundtrack that had some catchy tunes that are very nostalgic and faithful to the NES versions, and while they don't sound as good as the NES games, it still good and isn't as bad as Mega Man II for the Game Boy.
- Balanced difficulty unlike most Mega Man games, since here it is neither too hard nor too easy, making it a great start to newcomers if they want to start playing the Mega Man franchise through the handheld titles.
- Toad Man isn't a complete joke in this game compared to his NES counterpart, as here he's more challenging.
- Fun boss fights as usual.
- Despite the screen being crunched, there is an action where you can controls the camera to help see your surroundings, making the cheap deaths less present.
- Some of the weapons are slighly improved from their NES counterparts.
- Unlike most game ports of U.S. Gold on other platforms, like Street Fighter 2 on the Amiga, this one is actually decent.
- Really good level design that is faithful to the NES games counterpart, and it decently adapt to the Game Gear screen despite still having a problematic screen crunch.
Bad Qualities
- Some remixes are terrible, since some of them sound very ear bleeding and sometime unbearable, such as the boss theme that is annoying after a while.
- The screen crunch makes the enemies hard to see coming, which increases the difficulty even more (depending on the player, that can be a good thing).
- Unlike the NES games, there are no continues.
- The plot is nothing special and is somewhat dull and generic, and the ending is even worse.
- There is only one E-Tank in the entire game, which is not helped by the fact that the enemies are hard to see coming.
- The game is very short as it has only four robot masters in the beginning and three in Wily's stages, which is a downgrade from the first Mega Man game on the NES, but at least it's not as bad as the DOS version since that version doesn't had more than 3 robot masters.
- For some people, this game could feel like a rehash of both Mega Man 4 and 5 due to the fact that the game directly takes levels from these mentioned games.
- Due to being released only in North America, the game is very expensive nowadays. To make matters worse, the game was not re-released on the 3DS virtual console.
- Unlike most Mega Man games on the NES, Rush is not that useful.
Trivia
- The game was almost going to be released on the 3DS virtual console as it's got a rating from the ESRB, but unfortunately, that re-release got cancelled.
- This is the only Mega Man game that was released exclusively in North America and not in other regions.
