Men in Black II: Alien Escape is an action-adventure game developed by Infogrames Melbourne House and published by Infogrames, partially based on the film Men in Black II. The game was released for the PlayStation 2 in June 28, 2002 and received a GameCube port in April 8, 2003.
Bad Qualities
- Agent J and Agent K don't feature the voices or likenesses of neither Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, and the stand-ins do a poor job of substitution. They both play identically, so there is no difference on who you play as.
- The game has very little to do with the movie, and the story the game does feature is quite forgettable with a cheesy script.
- There are only six weapons in the whole game.
- There are only 5 levels in the whole game which last about half an hour each, meaning the game can be beaten in a couple of hours.
- Poor sound mixing; the voices and music were recorded at different volumes, so you'll have to turn up the volume of the voices to hear them over the loud music.
- The gameplay is very repetitive. Most of the time you will be fighting the same aliens over and over again.
- Stiff character animations.
- The game can be really hard to play, especially in the first level.
- The graphics look kinda muddy, even for PS2 standards.
Good Qualities
- Easy to understand control scheme, despite being repetitive.
- Your health bar also controls the power of your weapons, so if you have a lower health bar, your weapons will be weaker, which is a nice gameplay touch.
- Additionally, there are upgrades to pick up after killing enemies which makes the weapons even more powerful.
- Despite the muddy graphics, the GameCube version looks slightly better, but not by much.
- This game, along with the 2001 PS1 game: Men in Black: The Series: Crashdown and the GBC games are more tolerable than the 1997 PS1 game and the 2012 Alien Crisis game.
- The soundtrack is great, despite being repetitive.
Reception
The game received mixed-to-negative reviews, and the PS2 version's Metacritic score is 50.
