Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is an action-adventure stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. It was released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in March 2014, and for Microsoft Windows via Steam in December 2014. It is the eighth game in the Metal Gear series directed, written, and designed by Hideo Kojima, and serves as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which was released the following year.

Why It Rocks

  1. Amazing graphics with lots of incredible detail to the environments, character models, etc. for 2014 that still holds up greatly today.
  2. The game works as a good setup for The Phantom Pain.
  3. Great voice acting especially Kiefer Sutherland who replaces David Hayter as Big Boss.
  4. This game, as well as, the main one has the darkest story in the franchise. An example would be the scene where Paz has to have C4 removed from her stomach and the infamous Chico Cassette Tape 4.
  5. The game has a backstory section for Peace Walker; this is really helpful for people who didn't play Peace Walker or to help recap for people who did.
  6. You can upload your save data to The Phantom Pain, giving you access to some new items, plus transferring soldiers and prisoners onto the main game at Mother Base.
  7. The Side Ops mission Intel Operative Rescue, in which you must save an Intel Operative, which after doing so, it's revealed to be the legendary Hideo Kojima, which you can also transfer to The Phantom Pain.
  8. In the main mission of the game, Ground Zeroes, there are 10 XOF Badges scattered around the base. If you manage to collect them all, you'll unlock two extra missions: Déjà Vu and Jamais Vu, both of them being some incredible and fun missions to play.
    • In Déjà Vu, players have to recreate scenes from Metal Gear Solid by using hints given for each scene. In doing so, will check off the scene and add it to your mission completion. Once done, the player will have to crawl toward a vent (a reference to the early moments of the original MGS) to complete it. That's not the end though...
      • Once completing the main mission, Snake ends up finding himself in a quiz test, where he has to answer questions related to the original game, also accompanied by other characters like Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot. This is an obvious reference to the torture section in the original, as Snake is told that there are no continues at this point and to not look up the answers on the internet, a reference to getting killed in the original (thus restarting from the last point you saved) and not being allowed to use a Turbo controller. While optional, it's necessary for unlocking extra rewards, as successfully getting all answers right will reward the player with cosmetic skins; on Normal difficulty, the Classic Snake skin is rewarded, while on Hard, the Cyborg Ninja skin is rewarded. Those can also be transferred for use in The Phantom Pain.
    • The Jamais Vu mission is where you have to hunt down and kill body-snatchers (a reference to Hideo Kojima's Snatcher) while playing as Raiden. Doing so will also unlock the Raiden skin and can be used in The Phantom Pain.
  9. Added lots of enhanced stealth and gameplay mechanics like being able to hide bodies, marking enemies with your binoculars, sprinting, and an interactive map.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game is very short with only six hours of content (although it does make sense since it's the Prologue of The Phantom Pain).
  2. For the first time, David Hayter does not play Big Boss and was replaced with Kiefer Sutherland, but Sutherland still does a great job nonetheless.
  3. It was priced at $50 on its launch, which was too much given that this is, again, a prologue.

Reception

"You fucked it up!/You done fucked it up!"
This game was given a 5/10 by AngryJoe.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes received "generally favorable" reviews from critics on all platforms except on PS3 which received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.

Trivia

  • The line Kaz said "They Played Us Like A Damn Fiddle" has become a very popular internet meme, especially in regards to Konami.
  • This is the only main-line Metal Gear game without cardboard boxes. This is due to Hideo Kojima wanting to do a more serious and dark tone with the story, but cardboard boxes did, however, make their way into the main game.
