Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, or simply Walt Disney’s The Three Musketeers is a 2004 American animated direct-to-video musical adventure film based on the film adaptations of the 1844 novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and the Mickey Mouse film series by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. As the title suggests, it features Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy as the three musketeers.
This film was directed by Donovan Cook, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and the Australian office of DisneyToon Studios. It was released directly to VHS and DVD on August 17, 2004, by Walt Disney Home Entertainment, and was later re-released on Blu-ray Disc on August 12, 2014, coinciding with the film's 10th anniversary. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised its musical numbers, action sequences and faithfulness to the original material, but were mixed on certain aspects and elements.
Why It Rocks
- The idea of a full-length feature film starring the Classic Disney Shorts characters in a pre-existing story is a pretty good idea.
- Great voice-acting, as all of the then-voice actors reprised their roles, including the late Wayne Allwine, Tony Aselmo, Bill Farmer, Jim Cummings, Russi Taylor, Tress MacNellie, and even Rob Paulsen.
- Good animation that feels very alive for something made by Walt Disney Animation Studios and still holds up today, even better compared to most other traditionally animated Disneytoon movies.
- Everyone is still likable as before.
- The soundtrack by Bruce Broughton is incredible.
- Speaking of music, the songs are all excellent and contrast well in tone.
Bad Qualities
- Despite being a 2D traditionally animated film, it was released as a direct-to-video film. This is most likely due to the fact that theatrical animated feature films has been switched to 3D computer animation with the successes of Toy Story, Shrek and Ice Age.
- Some of the jokes can be very silly and unoriginal.
- Mickey and Minnie's romantic feelings to each other can be quite a filler at times.
- Some scenes can be disturbing for the most sensitive.
- Even worse, there is a scene before that where Donald is almost beheaded by Pete, which is quite dark, even for a movie like this.
- Unfortunately, this ended being the last time the Sensational Six (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse) have ever made an appearance in a feature-length film.
