Midnight Patrol: Adventures in the Dream Zone (Potsworth & Co. in the United Kingdom) is a 1990 British-American animated television series. It was co-created by Martin and Vivien Schrager-Powell, and co-produced by H-B Production Co., and Sleepy Kids PLC. It was featured along with several, other shows as part of the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera block.
Plot
Four racially-diverse, American kids (Caucasian siblings Rosie and Nick, black boy Carter, and Asian girl Keiko) and a dog (an English springer spaniel) named Potsworth get transferred to the Dream Zone nightly after they fall asleep. There, under the Snooze Patrol, they are defenders of the Dream Zone, where most of them gain special powers or abilities and they stand guard over the subconsciousnesses, and make sure they aren't disrupted by their archenemy, the Nightmare Prince.
Why The Show Kiss Freddy Krueger Goodnight
- It's refreshing as one of the Hanna-Barbera shows to be created by anyone else besides the studio's late co-founders.
- The episodes' stories are some of the smartest written of any show and make for examples on how more shows (cartoon or otherwise) should be done properly.
- One of the studio's shows that is better animated and more cartoony, both in art visuals and effects.
- An excellent theme song that has some kind of 1980s sound left over.
- It gives kid viewers more than what they're credited or taken for when it comes to their intelligence.
- Several great characters, most notably the Midnight Patrol themselves, who have good chemistry and make for an example of committing teamwork.
- The Nightmare Prince and his minions are superb, comical villains who counter the kids and dog that comprise the team well.
- The roles are well-voiced, including the late Clive Revill as Potsworth and the up-and-coming, then-kid voice actors of the Midnight Patrol.
- Some creative, visual gags and funny moments.
- It spawned a fair amount of merchandise, including a comic book series, a computer game, and figurines of the main characters.
- The concept is an intriguing one.
Bad Qualities
- Rosie can be unlikable and bratty at times.
- It lasted only 13 episodes being the show's cancelled.
Trivia
- This is one of three cartoons from the 1990s to have dreams as the theme. The others are Captain Zed and the Zee Zone and The Dreamstone.
- The Potsworth character is inspired by the real-life Potsworth, whom the Powells brought home from a dog shelter and adopted.
