Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a fighting video game developed by SIMS and published by Sega and is based on the TV series of the same name. The game was released on the Game Gear in 1994 in North America and Europe.
Gameplay
This version is a fighting game that is similar, but not identical to the Genesis version. In this version, the player has three basic attacks (one which is done by pressing the two action buttons simultaneously), a throw, and three special moves per character. The game consists of three game modes: a single-player story game which features a series of plot-based battles against the computer, a single-player VS. game, and a 2-player Link game in which the player against another player using the link cable.
Why It Rocks
- It is a big improvement over the Sega Genesis version, as it is now a hybrid beetween a beat 'em up game and a fighting game, which sound very interesting.
- The graphics are really good for a Game Gear title, as they are very detailled, having an amazing sprite work that is one of the most detailled on the console, and the color palette is very appealing to look at.
- Solid and responsive controls.
- The gameplay is very fun and unique for it's time since the fighting system is very fun and is easy to play, while still being challenging, in fact this gameplay style would be used again for this game sequel.
- Great soundtrack, especially the theme song rendition.
- The rangers each got their own playstyle, which is great since at least they are not palette swap like in the Game Boy version, and their playstyle is awesome.
- The game is challenging.
- There's three Megazord to use, which are all great and make up for having replay values as you might want to try all of them especially because they had their own way to attacks.
- There's the usual Megazord, which had the basic attacks such as the punch and kicks, which is very fun and powerful.
- Dragonzord playstyle is also great and it had strong attacks, which are useful when you fight a boss that is very strong.
- Dragonzord F had the best playstyle so far, being extremely powerful, fast and his attacks are very satistying to pull off.
- The Megazord battles are just as fun as previously seen in the other versions, especially that it feel like a fighting game, and at such it break the repetitive nature of the gameplay.
- For a Game Gear game, it had ton of replay values, especially because it had a 2-player link cable mode, which is fun and you had the VS. mode and off course the usual story mode.
Bad Qualities
- Rita dialogues when you beat the monsters are pretty much the same, which is lazy.
- Despite the replay values, the game is still very short, as there's only 7 stages, and you can beat the game in only 30 minutes.
