It originally aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on February 25, 2017.

Summary

SpongeBob learns that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", but soon loses his own identity while imitating others.

Why It Mimicked the Best of SpongeBob

  1. It tests Tom Kenny's voice acting very well, and it shows he did a great job in this episode.
    • He's able to sound like most of the characters SpongeBob mimicked.
  2. The animation of SpongeBob mimicking characters by making their shape is very smooth every time
  3. "Who Am I" was an emotional song with how victorious it sounds and the lyrics that sound like #SpongeBob is really having an identity crisis.
  4. It executes the identity crisis plot very well.
  5. It's decently funny, featuring multiple jokes:
    • "80,000 impressions later..."
    • In the ending, where his friends imitate him, then because they did in order to help him figure out who he is, they all have his exact personality.
  6. A reference to Bubblestand where SpongeBob "brings it around town".

Bad Qualities

  1. Tom Kenny voice acting Mr. Krabs was very noticeable when SpongeBob imitating Krabs said "Who Am I" in the song in the episode.
    • His imitation of Pearl also sounds off.
  2. The ending where SpongeBob’s friends catch the Mocking Mimicry Madness can be a bit disturbing depending on how you see it, not helped by the fact that the final shot is a close up of Squidward's eyes showing his real distraught self demanding to be left out of his subconscious (while yelling "LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT!").

Reception

"Mimic Madness" was hailed by many SpongeBob fans as one of the best episodes in the series and in the Post-Sequel Era. Even though its sister episode was somewhat disliked by people, it still got an 8.3/10 on IMDb, probably because of how well loved this episode is. It is also the highest-rated post-sequel episode on SpongeBuddy Mania, with an average score of 9.18/10 based on 73 ratings. PieGuyRulz, Ask Air, and Mr. Enter all call it their favorite Season 10 episode.
