Despicable Me: Minion Rush (commonly known as just Minion Rush) is a endless runner mobile game developed and published by Gameloft for Android and iOS in 2013, based on the movie Despicable Me 2.
Why It Used To Be Bananas (In A Good Way)
- While it does share various similarities that of other endless runners (e.g. Subway Surfers and Temple Run) it thankfully has enough content to stand out from those two titles.
- As the updates progressed, it started introducing more content, such as Minion Races and Events which allows you to play online and compete against other players, as well as a new map called Downtown, though sadly these would be removed in the 5th Year Celebration update.
- As to be expected from a game based on the Despicable Me franchise, the main goal of the game is to become the most despicable minion of all time.
- Punching minions in your way will allow you to unlock a Despicable Bonus, which is one of the most important aspects of the game as it increases your score depending on how many Minions you punched.
- There are also powerups that can be collected while you're running.
- The multipliers double the amount of bananas you collect, which also increases your score.
- The freeze ray allows you to turn any obstacle into ice, as well as breaking through them.
- Newer updates also allowed you to turn into a Evil Minion via a powerup, although temporarily.
- Stays very faithful to the movies and franchise that its based on, particularly Despicable Me 2.
- Good controls to work with, as they are pretty much the same as the ones in Subway Surfers.
- Swiping in any direction on the screen will result in your Minion changing lanes, and swiping up will allow you to jump over obstacles. Swiping down will result in you barrel-rolling/ducking under obstacles that cannot be jumped over.
- You can customize your Minion with various costumes and accessories by either coins or collecting enough bananas.
- The game also has boss fights from the movies, such as Vector, El Macho, and Meena, the latter being a character made just for the game, though sadly they were either removed or were reduced to much smaller roles in future updates.
- The entire game can be played offline, meaning that it's playable even when you are on the go.
- The graphics are really good, especially for a mobile game released in 2013, in which they still look good to this day.
- There are also optional missions that can be played, which will allow you to unlock more coins.
- All of the maps in the game are well designed and are faithful to the movies, such as Residential Area, Gru's Lab (which is the most iconic), and El Macho's Lair.
- Then there's the Jelly Lab, while it isn't considered to be as good as the versions before it, is still considered to be a decent update and is better than the ones released afterwards.
- The cutscenes are well-animated.
- It can actually be pretty challenging at times.
- There are also modded versions of the game that allow you to have custom skins for your Minion, as well as reviving an infinite amount of times.
Bad Qualities
- The Jelly Lab update, while not awful, isn't considered to be as good as the old version of the game that allowed you to run endlessly. It was also another sign of Gameloft becoming more greedy, as the level select screen looked similar to that of Candy Crush.
- The PC version barely gets any updates compared to that of the Android and iOS versions. It's also no longer possible to play it on Windows 8.1 anymore due to the latter's Microsoft Store being shut down.
- The game sadly went downhill starting in 2018 with the 5 Year Celebration update, with several aspects of the game being discontinued such as the Jelly Lab, Minion Races and Events, Power-Ups, Props and Mini Games, the Golden Banana and Golden Shield, etc.. Click here to see its negative page.
Reception
The game (prior to 2018) received positive reviews from mobile players and Minion Rush fans.
