Monica and Friends (Portuguese: Turma da Mônica), formerly known as Monica's Gang, is a Brazilian animated series, based on the comic book of the same name, by Maurício de Sousa. The series currently broadcasts on the Latin American (starting 2013) and Brazilian feed (starting 2004) of Cartoon Network, on the public channels TV Cultura (airing briefly in 2008 and since 2017) and SBT (starting 2023) and on the Latin American and Brazilian versions of HBO Max and Cartoonito (starting 2021). Previously, the series aired on TV Globo three times, once 1976 to 1987, once more 1999 to 2001, and finally finishing with TV Globo from 2010 to 2014. Outside TV, the show would premiere various episodes on home video and in movie theaters through many compilation movies.

Por que essa garota merece Sansão (Why This Girl Deserves Samson)

  1. It is very faithful to the source material, only making a few adaptations when necessary.
  2. Likeable and memorable protagonists, like Monica, Maggy (Magali), Smudge (Cascão), Jimmy Five (Cebolinha, depending on your view), Franjinha (Franklin), Anjinho (Angel), Xaveco (Sunny), Louco (Nutty Ned), Chico Bento (Chuck Billy) and etc.
    • All of them retain their charming personalities from the source material without too many changes.
  3. Great animation, especially when we are talking about the episodes made in the 80's, late 90's, 2009 and 2017/2021.
  4. The show contains several funny jokes and gags.
  5. Decent voice acting, which improves as the series progresses.
  6. Has, at least, three successful spin-offs, including as Monica Toy, Blu Dog (Biduzidos), and Monica Adventures (Turma da Mônica Jovem.)
  7. It also has some great movies, like Turma da Mônica: Laços, A Princesa e o Robô, and Turma da Mônica em Uma Aventura no Tempo.
  8. Some of the episodes can be quite heartwarming, examples include:
    • A História do Galo Ataliba (The Rooster Ataliba's Tale)
    • O Monstro da Lagoa (The Monster from the Lagoon)
    • A Estrelinha Mágica (The Little Magic Star)
  9. Many of the episodes are memorable, such as:
    • O Natal da Turma da Mônica (The Christmas of Monica and Friends; mainly because it is the first episode of the series)
    • Um Amor de Ratinho (An Love of Mouse)
    • Cascão no País das Torneirnhas (Smudge in the Land of Little Taps)
    • A Gruta do Diabo (The Devil's Grotto)
    • Jacaré de Estimação (Pet Alligator)
    • A Sereia do Rio (The Mermaid from the River)
    • O Bicho-papão (The Boogeyman)
    • Um Dia de Cão (A Dog Day)
    • O Detetive (The Detective)
    • Chico Bento em: Oia a Onça! (Chuck Billy in: Watch the Jaguar!)
    • Na Roça é Diferente (It's Different on the Farm)
    • Duelo em Quadrinhos (A Cartoon Duel)
    • O Estranho Soro do Doutor X (Doctor X's Weird Serum)
    • A Ilha Misteriosa (The Mysterious Island)
    • Chico Mico (Chuckey Monkey)
    • O Guarda-Chuva Voador (The Flying Umbrella)
    • Bichinhos sem Pelúcia (Pet without Plush; depending on your view)
    • Irmão Cascão (Brother Smudge)
    • Plano Hipnótico (Hypnotic Plan)
    • Turma da Mônica Contra o Capitão Feio (Monica and Friends Vs. Captain Fray)
    • Um Coelho de Verdade (A Real Bunny)
    • Folias no Clube (Follies at the Club)
    • O Coelhinho Amarelo (The Yellow Bunny)
    • O Quarto Posterizado (The Posterized Room)
    • Versus Versus Versus
  10. Excellent songs, especially the one of the show's theme songs, A Fantasia se torna real.
  11. It gets lots of quality merchandise, such as dolls, video games, books, and even candy.
  12. This show stands out as the first Brazilian animated series ever created, way before Ancine or The National Film Agency was formed, encouraging the creation of more animated series from Brazil.

Qualidades do "Coelho Esmagado" ("Bashed Bunny" Qualities)

  1. A few mediocre and bad episodes can appear from time to time, like:
    • Oh, Que Dia! (Oh, What a Day!)
    • Algo Verde, Mole e Pegajoso (Something green, soft and sticky)
    • Boas Maneiras (Good Manners)
    • Os Brincos Novos que a Mamãe Comprou (The New Earrings that Mom has Bought)
    • O Corpo Fala (The Body Talks)
    • Peteca (Shuttlecock)
    • Provas Comprometedoras (Compromissing Proofs)
    • Reptilianos (Reptilians)
  2. It can get mean-spirited at times, usually with the fights with Monica and Jimmy Five.
  3. It started to go downhill, starting with episodes produced in late 2009. The show started having weaker and more generic plots, along with the flanderization of many characters. This also made some fans to stop watching the show.
    • Even before that, the show had already went downhill, with the infamous Quadro a Quadro, which is considered to be a huge downgrade to previous Monica and Friends animations, though later installments had mostly received good reception.
  4. There are some cases where the animation can be mediocre or straight up bad depending on the season:
    • The animation from Quadro a Quadro as a whole is an infamous example.
    • Episodes from 1997-1998 (released as part of O Mônico and O Plano Sengrento) use low quality CGI backgrounds, even for 90s standards. But still, this is mostly an improvement from the aforementioned movie, and the 2D animation is more expressive and dinamic.
    • The episodes from 1998 to 1999 (released as part of O Estranho Soro do Dr. X and A Ilha Misteriosa), despite having decent enough animation and hand-drawn backgrounds, it is filled to the brim with visible animation errors. This is because they were outsourced to a Chinese animation studio.
    • Episodes from 2002 to 2009 have the characters mostly standing and having limited facial expressions.
    • The animation of episodes released between 2012 to 2015 is very stiff and awful compared to other Flash-animated episodes of this series.
    • The animation of the 2017 and 2021 episodes, while improved from the previous episodes, can become pretty choppy at times.
  5. The show can be very childish sometimes.
  6. The redubbing of episodes between 1986 and 1999 were unnecessary, mediocre at best, and, unfortunately, replaced the original versions.
  7. The English dub done at Centaro Communications can fluctuate in quality, sometimes leading to music drowning out the voices.
