MultiVersus is a free-to-play crossover fighting game developed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game features various characters within the Warner Bros. Discovery catalog, including those from Warner Bros., DC Comics, HBO, Turner Entertainment, and Cartoon Network.

Multiverse Qualities

  1. There is a variety of playable characters to choose from. These characters come from the Warner Bros. Discovery library no matter if it's a DC character, an HBO character, a Hanna Barbera character, a Cartoon Network character, a Turner character, or whatever it is, you might find some recognizable faces like Finn, Batman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, The Iron Giant, Rick Sanchez, or even LeBron James himself of all things.
    • Original characters appear too with Reindog being a notable one.
  2. Even though microtransactions exist, the game is not pay to win at all. If you want to unlock characters you can use gold to get the characters you want or if you want to get your characters faster you can use gleam which requires some real paying so there are two different options to get your characters.
    • Characters are not the only ones, as you can also use them to get cosmetics as well.
    • The best part about the characters is that they don't appear for a limited time only just to avoid any stress of wanting to pick out your character.
    • Gleam is optional so it's not required to pay for it.
  3. Good voice acting with most voice actors reprising their roles as their respective characters like Kevin Conroy as Batman, George Newbern as Superman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, Eric Bauza as Bugs Bunny, Jeremy Shada as Finn, John DiMaggio as Jake, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Estelle as Garnet, Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley, Jim Cummings as Taz, and archived recordings of William Hanna as Tom & Jerry. Other VAs did a good job as well doing good portrayals as their respective characters like Jonathan Lipow as The Iron Giant, John Eric Bentley as LeBron James, Daniel Divenere as Steven Universe, and Abby Trot as Wonder Woman.
  4. Colorful and cartoony graphics that fit the tone's wild and wacky nature. No matter if it's a more serious character or a more comedic character, the graphics make the entire game consistent.
  5. The characters have some cool skins to use if you wanted to use them. Heck, some of the skins just so happen to be based on other characters complete with different voices with Uncle Shagworthy and Cake being the most notable and earlier ones.
  6. There is a rotating selection of characters that occurs every two weeks just to give everyone a chance to try out certain characters before wanting to purchase them once the characters are out. Once the characters are out of the rotation, you won't have to worry about your progress being reset.
  7. A unique characteristic about the game is that a lot of the characters have interactions with other characters depending on who they are facing in battle. They can just be characters from the same universe or characters interacting with one another despite being in a different universe.
  8. Toast is another currency yet a unique one. You can use toast to respect your opponent to signal a good game.
  9. All the characters have a level-up system that can make them stronger in battle as well as getting rewards including coins and perks.
  10. Oh and speaking of perks, they are little stats that can be useful during battle and the characters all have them. To get perks, you better level up as mentioned earlier.
  11. The stages are breathtaking to look at and many of them come from some of the characters' legendary worlds like the Treefort from Adventure Time or the Batcave from DC. Lots of the stages are unique with layout and hazards.
  12. Supports cross-platform.
  13. The fights can come in a different variety. You can fight with your friends, other people online, or with bots. How many do you want to fight against? You can do either a 2-vs-2, a 1-vs-1, or a free for all if you like.
  14. The Lab is basically a training mode yet the best part about training mode is that you can try out all the characters in this mode regardless if you have the characters or not. If you like a character you don't have, you may get the character to use in battle.
  15. Just like games including Rocket League, Fall Guys, Disney Speedstorm, and Pokémon UNITE, there is a rewards meter that comes in two called the Battle Pass. One is for rewards that are given for free while the other is for rewards that you have to pay with gleam. The free rewards meter gives you more basic rewards while the gleam meter gives you some outrageous ones. Each season it changes.
    • Items earned from a MultiVersus Battle Pass are not exclusive. There may be opportunities to unlock some of these items in the game at a later date.
  16. The developers, Player First Games, are great and can take feedback and criticism for the game. Because of this, the game had a closed alpha test that occurred from February 25 to March 8, 2022, with a beta game released in July 2022. They are the reasons why the game updates itself to make the game better including patches and whatnot. Heck, they can be the reason why loot boxes don't exist in this game.
  17. For those who played the Open Beta, you can carry forward the player progression and unlocks earned during the previous Early Access period.
  18. Has a different yet option in-game content purchase that you can get with real money. It can be costly but it can be useful for getting characters and cosmetics.
  19. For the very first battle of the day, you can get bonus rewards if you were to win the first match of the day.
  20. Achievements exist in this game, they can help out fill up your Battle Pass via red ribbons. Earlier achievements give you coins instead.
  21. Playing in a team battle is quite fun because this game allows characters to use some abilities to help out one another during the match.
  22. The soundtrack does have remixes of existing songs
  23. New characters along with new content are planned to be added to the game later.
  24. Unlike Killer Instinct (2013), another free-to-play fighting game, you can actually unlock playable characters for free in this game without being stuck with only one free character and rest you're forced to pay for with real-world money.
  25. Starting on Season 2, ranked has been added in the game. In Ranked, players can reach ranks once they seize victory to other opponents.

Bad Qualities

  1. If you wanted to unlock characters via gold it can be a bit time-consuming and tiresome to do that.
  2. The game's roster is extremely generic and corporate like, with next to no out there picks, thought that could change overtime, knowing PFG, as they stated they would keep adding characters, as long as everyone keeps requesting them (check WTMIAYF#16).
  3. Sometimes having to fight against players and bots with a higher level than you can be really frustrating.
  4. You need a good internet connection to play online because if you don't, you won't be able to play normally.
  5. It may give some players seizures for those who have epilepsy. Heck, the game also did warn about that when you boot up the game.
  6. Unfortunately, there is no pause button, even while fighting against bots. And no, going to the main screen of your console does not work. So for those who have to take a little break, like to get a snack or something, you'll have to wait until the match is over.
  7. The game lacks identity, as the mechanics are extremely undercooked, like the perks or team aspect of the game, as even assist characters lack tools to help your allies
  8. The game often gives you quests you cannot do since you don't have access to said character class
  9. As of August 2022, mods are banned from the game, even if you're not playing online.
  10. Character skins are ridiculously expensive, as costumes can cost up to $20
  11. There is an extreme oversight where you can get DDoS'd in game, which happened to Hungrybox during a stream
  12. There is bad audio mixing, making it hard to hear the music or voice acting
    • Speaking of music, most of it is extremely bad, or unfitting
  13. The Founder's Pack is pretty overpriced.
  14. A Warner Bros. Account is required to play this game at all, even when you're not playing online.
  15. The launch state is considered inferior than the beta test and it removed several features and changes. Stuff like it doesn't have offline couch play, character currency are increased, too slow for gameplay, etc. This state is looks like the actual beta state than the launch state.
    • And the worse part is the rifts: Rifts is a PvE mode that you're battling against AI, the problem is you must collect and grinding over and over to unlock the character and skins. This mode is exactly Pay to Win.

Reception

The game has gotten positive reviews. PCMAG gave the game a 3.5. On Steam, it has "mostly positive" reviews, with 77% of Steam users recommending the game globally. Since launch, however, user reception has been mixed, with users complaining about the predatory microtransactions present in the game.

It's considered to be Warner Bros' biggest Steam launch by far.

The game will be delisted because this game was in a beta, actually, until the game will be full launch on May 28, 2024.
