Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is a part of the Ganbare Goemon franchise one of the small number of Ganbare Goemon games released to the U.S. It was released for the Nintendo 64.
Plot
Goemon and his allies, Ebisumaru, Yae, and Sasuke, must save Japan after the Peach Mountain Shogun, a part of the criminal syndicate, the Flake Gang, plot to transform all of Japan into a giant stage for fame.
Why It Rocks
- Humorous and funny storyline, as usual with the Goemon franchise.
- For it's time, the graphics are very impressive and are some of the best looking from a Nintendo 64 game, especially for a game made in 1997, as the characters models are very detailled and well made, as well as the backgrounds, and the graphics are just colorful, as what you expect from a Goemon game.
- Each character can obtain different tools and weapons, some of which are necessary to advance through the game.
- This also give this game a RPG feel, which was not really seen previously in the series, and that also make the game slightly more unique than it's already is.
- Three moments where you pilot the giant robot Impact in FP style giant robot boss battles, which are all awesome.
- Very solid controls that translate perfectly from the 2D games, as they are just as tight and responsive, and because of this, the game is even more fun and also you will never get any cheap deaths from the controls at all, thank to how well made this game is.
- The soundtrack is awesome, even the songs such as the "I Am Impact" song.
- Large world to explore, making the open world adventure very reminiscent to The Legend of Zelda.
- Hidden in the game are silver fortune dolls and golden fortune dolls. Collect four silver fortune dolls to upgrade your health and collect one golden fortune doll for the same effect.
- Each character has a unique ability that can be unlocked through gyms.
- Goemon can increase his strength to move metal boxes and deal double damage, though he can also receive double damage.
- Ebisumaru can shrink in size to fit through tiny holes.
- Yae can transform into a mermaid to explore underwater areas.
- Sasuke can reach higher platforms with his rocket jumps.
- Overall, it's a perfect translation to 3D for the Ganbare Goemon franchise.
Bad Qualities
- Extremely stubborn and troublesome camera that is often placed at bad places and it could cause some cheap hits/deaths at times.
- Getting to a certain place requires a necessary item or weapon, which leads to backtracking.
- While the chain pipe is a very cool weapon, the aiming can be very awkward whenever you try to aim it directly to where you want it to go.
Reception
Like The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon was critically acclaimed. The game has a 4.16 rating out of 5 at GameFAQS.
