Sony, don't rush your football franchise to your next-gen console. Otherwise, it'll be bad, just like Sonic '06.

NFL GameDay 2001 is an American football game developed by RedZone Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America under its 989 Sports label. It was released in 2000 for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles.

This page will only cover the PS2 version of the game.

Why It Is Not GameDay

  1. It was rushed to shelves for the 2000 holiday season.
  2. It reuses animations from the PS1 installments of the NFL GameDay series, mostly from NFL GameDay 99.
  3. There are several bugs and glitches.
    • The gameplay even suffers from several slowdowns.
  4. It has an infamous feature called ProTalk.
    • Not only the players react in game, but also coaches, which makes it annoying.
  5. No practice mode.
  6. Play editor is smaller comparing to its PS1 counterpart.
  7. Lineups can't be edited before every game in season mode.
  8. None of the past Super Bowl stadiums are present.
  9. It lacks a user record system.
  10. It doesn't seem to take advantage of the PlayStation 2's capabilities.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. It features decent commentary from Dick Enberg and Phil Simms.

Reception

On Metacritic, NFL GameDay 2001 received mixed-to-negative reviews with a Metascore of 51.[1]
