Naruto: Clash of Ninja, released in Japan as Naruto: Gekitō Ninja Taisen! (激闘忍者大戦!), is a series of 3D cel-shaded fighting games based on the manga and anime series Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto.

Why They Rock

Overall

  1. Each game is extremely faithful to the manga and anime series. All of the characters have their own respective moves and each story mode follows the anime really well.
  2. The combat is extremely satisfying to pull off. It even feels better to do than many modern fighting games (Looking at you Tekken).
  3. The music in each game sounds like it came straight out of the anime and manga series. Many of the songs consist of a mixture of Japanese traditional songs and hard rock music.
  4. The graphics don't look that bad either. Each character model looks extremely nice and they even have some shading.
  5. The presentations are excellent. The characters even shout out the title of the game every time you boot it up, which is a really nice touch. Some of the games even have the female character as the narrator.
  6. Excellent voice acting in both English and Japanese.
  7. Extremely cool looking special moves. Some of them include Naruto's Rasengan, Itachi's Tsukiyomi and Sasuke's Chidori.
  8. Excellent replay value. Each game will take you a while to unlock everything.
  9. You can recreate tons of major fights in this game. You can even do some dream fights that haven't been shown in the manga series like Zabuza vs Gaara and Itachi vs Minato.
  10. Each game even has a solid amount of characters to choose from.

Clash of Ninja

  1. It was the first Naruto game released in America.
  2. Includes some special character profiles.

Clash of Ninja 2

  1. Introduces a new game mode where you fight hordes of mist ninja clones, which is a nice break from battling.
  2. Improves on the first game by adding multiple playable characters, including Gaara, Neji and Kiba.
  3. This game has a longer story mode that takes you from the start of the series up to Naruto's fight with Gaara.

GNT 3/Revolution

  1. The game introduces transformations. Each time you power up, some characters can transform, like Naruto entering his nine-tails mode during battle.
  2. The story mode picks up where the last game left off.
  3. The American version removes the joke characters.
  4. The American version lets you use motion controls to fight.
  5. It adds in 3 new mini-games. Rasengan Training, Shadow Clone and Target Attack.
  6. Tons of easter eggs, like one mission based off the Kakashi's mask episode.
  7. There is even a trailer for the first Naruto movie in the game as well.

GNT 4

  1. It adds a lot more playable characters including all of the sound four members, Kisame and Choji.
  2. The story mode covers the Sasuke Retrieval Arc.
  3. Removes the shop feature.
  4. It adds a mission mode where you complete missions to unlock characters.
  5. Adds a lot more fighting mechanics.
  6. Due to the games popularity, a translated remake called Super Naruto Gekitō Ninja Taisen 4 has been released in 2020. This game fixes many bugs and you can play online.

Revolution 2

  1. The story mode is brand new. It focuses on a bad guy named Bando who possesses the Leaf Village. Naruto, Kakashi, Sakura and Gaara stop him.
  2. Adds in some new characters including Bando, Kagura, Komachi, Kiba, Choji and many others.
  3. Improves on many fighting mechanics found in the previous games.

EX

  1. Adds the Shippuden characters into the game.
  2. Due to it having a more powerful system, the fighting has been improved.

EX 2

  1. Shippuden Sasuke is a new playable character. For some reason, he wasn't in EX 1.
  2. Adds in Danger Zones, which are hazards that can harm the player.
  3. Also adds in a new hand seal mechanic, which can raise the players attack and health.

EX 3

  1. A new game mode called Hurricane Clash is featured. This mode lets players take on hordes of enemies in a large arena.
  2. Hidan and Kakuzu are now playable characters.
  3. Senrai Ninziki is added. This lets players gain a new power once they have reached Critical Mode.

Revolution 3

  1. A huge roster of over 40 playable characters, which is even bigger than that of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Notable characters include 6 of the 12 Akatsuki members, Bando and Kagura from Revolution 2, The ANBU version of Kakashi, and even the Shippuden version of Sasuke.
  2. Every character plays unique, For example, Deidara uses his explosives to attack and Chiyo and Kankuro fight using their puppets.
  3. Great story mode that can be very hard at times.
  4. It added Online Play, something that wasn't present in the previous Clash of Ninja games until now.
  5. Very balanced roster.
  6. Great new fighting mechanics. One of them being a special hand seal motion you can perform using the Nunchuck.
  7. Tons of content and new modes. One notable mode being Kumite, where you have to battle hordes of rogue fodder ninja and survive them.
  8. While they are a little outdated now, the cutscenes were extremely good for their time.
  9. Great soundtrack that sounds like it came straight out of the show. Tons of songs are even brought back from the previous Clash of Ninja games.
  10. Awesome special moves. There are even tag team specials where some teams have a unique special.
  11. Awesome opening movie that uses clips from the show.
  12. Very responsive and tight controls.
  13. Tons of controller options. You can even use the GameCube controller.
  14. Great graphics for a Wii game.
  15. Excellent voice acting. All the voice actors from the show reprised their roles.
  16. Excellent multiplayer modes.

Special

  1. Has the largest roster of all the games.
  2. Features Online Play.
  3. Adds in a substitution bar.
  4. The fighting has been perfected in this game.
  5. Ino is now playable.
  6. The story mode is extremely long.

Bad Qualities

Clash Of Ninja 1

  1. Has an extremely small roster, with there being only 12 characters.
  2. Rock Lee is extremely overpowered.
  3. The story mode is extremely short. You can beat it in less than an hour.
  4. You can only play as Naruto in the story mode.

Clash of Ninja 2

  1. Some characters like Akamaru and Crow are joke characters and not necessary.
  2. The store is awful. You will be grinding a lot.

GNT 3/Revolution

  1. There is less content here than in the second game.
  2. Some characters were removed in the American version, like Zabuza, Haku and Kiba.
  3. The Japanese version doesn't feature Kisame.

GNT 4

  1. Some characters are rather strange, like Akamaru, Crow and Anko.
  2. Some characters are also overpowered.

Revolution 2

  1. The story, while decent, isn't as good as Revolution 1's story mode.

EX

  1. The roster is a huge downgrade from the previous games, having only 14 playable characters while previous games had over 20 playable characters.
  2. The story is rather short.

EX 2

  1. The fighting, while still great, feels a bit worse than before.
  2. The new additions are kind of gimmicky.

EX 3

  1. Hurricane Clash hasn't been featured in the later games.

Revolution 3

  1. While the story mode is great, it is very hard. The Deidara final boss is considered to be unfair.
  2. Some characters, such as Sasuke, Sai, Yamato, Orochimaru, Kabuto, Hidan and Kakuzu were never implemented into the story mode.
  3. Unlocking everything is a huge chore, since you need to buy stuff from an in-game store.
  4. For some reason, Hidan and Kakuzu, Deidara and Sasori and Naruto and Sasuke don't have unique specials.
  5. Some characters are overpowered like Deidara and Hiruko, and some characters are too weak like Kurenai.
  6. ANBU Kakashi is extremely difficult and confusing to unlock.

Special

  1. Pain isn't featured in the game, despite Sage Naruto being playable.

Reception

The games received very positive reviews. Nintendo Power gave Revolution 2 an 8.0 and IGN gave Revolution 3 an 8.0.

WatchMojo ranked Gekitō Ninja Taisen! Special the 2nd BEST in the Top 10 BEST & WORST Naruto games.[1]
