Naughty Bear is a 2010 arcade-style Beat 'em Up, Action/Adventure game released on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Plot
Set on Perfection Island in the 1980s, the game stars Naughty Bear, a mean teddy bear who sets out to punish those who have wronged him.
Why It Is a Naughty Game
- The game is very mean-spirited, with almost all of the characters being pretty unlikable:
- Naughty Bear, in spite of his bullied background with the other bears, goes too far to get revenge by brutally assaulting and murdering them. Is he really the protagonist?
- Even though it's understandable why the other bears dislike Naughty because of his cruel and mischevious personality, they are hypocritical and no better than him in the following ways:
- Daddles, the lime green bear, is a bully. He refuses to invite Naughty to his birthday party in Episode 1, and at the end of the game, when it appears he's made friends with Naughty, he humiliates the bear by shoving a cake in his face.
- In the intro, Fluffy, the indigo bear, throws rocks at Naughty's hut, for no reason, while Naughty was just sleeping in his bed and not causing any trouble. Fluffy also laughs at Naughty after shattering his window.
- When Naughty tries to make amends with Daddles for his birthday, when Chubby and Giggles see him with a present, they proceed to hysterically laugh at him and send Naughty sulk back into his nut.
- The unseen British narrator is also unlikable himself, as he encourages Naughty to go on his killing spree. His catchphrases are also annoying with how much he says them. He also convinces Naughty to kill Nibbles for causing a Zombear apocalypse in Episode 4, even though it was a mistake.
- Despite the game having a T-rating, it is very disturbing and violent, with Naughty having many weapons like a machete, pistols, an axe, and a baseball bat, and other traps, which he uses to murder the other bears. Even if the characters are teddy bears, all of the violent content would make the game more fitting to have an M-rating.
- The camera angles aren't very good, and the controls are clunky.
- The Beat 'em Up gameplay can get stale fast, with every episode focusing on Naughty scaring, or attacking and killing the mean bears, and continuously receiving "Naughty Points".
- Besides Naughty Bear and the Narrator, the other bears have almost have no personality, other than being cruel to Naughty.
- The whole game is very short, only lasting around a few hours. There are only seven Episodes total, with little variety. There could be an episode that explains why Naughty Bear is why he is, and why the other bears mistreat him so much.
- The story is a bit basic.
- While there are stealth elements, the game is lacking in that department.
Not Very Naughty Qualities
- The realistic visuals look okay for a PS3/Xbox 360 game.
- There are many different costumes for Naughty Bear to wear, which is a creative gameplay element.
- Good soundtrack, such as the Insane tracks, the Peace tracks, and the Main Menu.
- The game's concept is okay, but it just wasn't executed very well.
- The Narrator is the only character in the game who doesn't mistreat Naughty Bear.
Reception
The game received generally unfavorable reviews.
