Need for Speed Unbound (stylized as NFS Unbound) is an arcade racing video game, and the twenty-fifth and current installment of the Need for Speed series. It was developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Good Qualities
- The visual looks unique. Combining realistic cars and environment and toon-shaded characters.
- The effects look amazing. To the smoke, the wings when jumping and even the exhaust fire. You can even disable it.
- A lot of customization. More than in Heat.
- The police AI behaves better than Heat, yet easy to escape.
- It has pedestrians, which you don't even see once in the previous entries.
Hey, we want some money Qualities
- The soundtrack, MY GOD!!! The horrendous choices of soundtrack that are unfitting in the racing game. The notorious example is Rico Nasty's Money, which is more fitting to the EA's CEO desk. Most of them are based on TikTok songs. And because of this, many people mock the soundtrack compared to the old-school NFS soundtrack.
- A few exceptions that sound like a banger, like Moksi - Shout Like, AK AusserKontrolle x Bonez MC - In meinem Benz, and more.
- Lake Shore is kinda forgettable city.
- The story looks downgraded.
- The Zoomer dialogues are kinda cringe-worthy.
Reception
Need for Speed Unbound received "generally favorable" reviews from critics for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, while the PC version received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic.
During the 26th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated Need for Speed Unbound for "Racing Game of the Year".
Unbound was the 17th best-selling retail game in the United Kingdom in its week of release. Sales of the game were down 64% when compared with its predecessor Need for Speed Heat.
