New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii in 2009. It is a follow-up to New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS and is the second installment of the New Super Mario Bros. series. It was followed by a follow-up New Super Mario Bros. 2 (a direct sequel to the DS game) for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012 and a sequel New Super Mario Bros. U (a follow-up to the 3DS game) as a launch title on the Wii U also in 2012.

Why It Goes Bah-Bah

  1. Very tight controls since the game can reasonably read your inputs well when moving and jumping.
  2. Absolutely fantastic graphics. In fact, they actually look way nicer and cleaner than its predecessor, as usual. Also, the Koopa dances whenever a "Paah" sound effect is heard, it looks much more detailed and animated compared to its predecessor.
  3. It is the first game in the Super Mario Bros. series to have a multiplayer where all the players can play at the same time instead of taking turns.
  4. Yoshi makes an appearance as a power up once again after not appearing in the previous game.
  5. It introduces new power-ups like the Propeller Suit and the Penguin Suit while bringing back the best of the old ones, such as the Mini Mushroom or the Ice Flower.
  6. The Koopalings make a return to the Super Mario Bros. series after a 19-year hiatus, they also have voice actors!
  7. Like in the previous game, each of the levels have their own theme.
  8. Compared to the first entrance, this game is more challenging (much unlike its successor).
  9. Yellow Toad and Blue Toad are new playable characters, and it's interesting to see playable Toads again.
  10. Great and fun levels to play.
  11. Really good soundtrack.
  12. Great bosses, especially the final boss.
  13. The credits are shown as a minigame where the letters in the credits are written on blocks, which can be broken by the playable characters to get coins (all four characters appear, but only the ones controlled by players can get coins).
  14. A humorous Looney Tunes-esque ending in which Bowser (literally) gets crushed by his own castle, although off-screen, but a little bit violent for its rating.
  15. The special levels in the final World are almost like the expert levels from Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Bad Qualities

  1. The Mega Mushroom and the Blue Shell from its Nintendo DS predecessor sadly do not appear, and it's not really justified since the Wii's processing capacity is clearly higher than the DS.
  2. Although the Ice Flower is decent, it seems pointless with the existence of the Penguin Suit, which is way better as it also allows you to slide and move better on water like the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3.
  3. When playing through the game with two or more players, it can be a bit hectic as if the player is left behind for too long, they will lose a life, and the level designs have empty space for 4 players.
  4. Mario is the only character that can be played in a single-player.
  5. While the bosses are fun, they do get fought two times, one time as a mini-boss, and the second and final time as that stage's boss, though that can be neglected, as the Koopalings get new attacks thanks to Kamek and sometimes it even changes their battle style.
  6. In the single-player mode, there are certain Star Coins you cannot get and will make you lose a life if you try and get them.

Trivia

  • This game sold around the same numbers as the original New Super Mario Bros on Nintendo DS, both of which, sold around 30 million copies. However, all future entries of this series would underperform in sales numbers as a result (13 and 12+5 million copies for New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U (both versions) respectively), possibly due to the 3DS and Wii U not being nearly as successful as the DS and Wii (and because the Switch version was a reskin with some changes).
  • In November 2009, 24-year-old Australian James Burt purchased a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii several days before its release, as the store had mistakenly put it up for sale early, and ripped and uploaded the game disk online. Nintendo took down the game and sued Burt shortly afterwards, accusing him of violating copyright laws and depriving Nintendo of potential sales. The case was ultimately settled in January 2010, with Burt receiving a fine of AU$1.3 million as compensation for lost sales, as well as an additional fine of AU$100,000 as a part of Nintendo's legal fine.
  • The Blue and Yellow Toads are named "Bucken Berry" and "Ala Gold" respectively, according to this game's developers.
  • This was actually the first 2D Mario game to be released on a home console after Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which was released in 1995, 14 years before this game.
  • Unlike its predecessor, New Super Mario Bros., entering the Warp Cannon in World 4 will warp to World 6 instead of World 7, unlike World 1-3 and 5 where the Warp Cannon warps to the same world.
