Nickelodeon is an American pay television channel that was first tested on December 1, 1977, before launching nationwide on April 1, 1979, as the first children’s cable TV channel.

Why the First Kids' Network Used to Be the Great

  1. This was the very first major kids' TV network. It launched in 1979, ten years after the success and the launch of the world's number one preschool TV program, Sesame Street.
  2. It had many iconic and good shows (especially the Nicktoons and Nick Jr.) that were never seen before.
  3. The catchy iconic jingle.
    • At the beginning of each Nickelodeon-related VHS tape during the '90s, the remixed version of its jingle would make the Nickelodeon theme song catchier than this.
  4. They greatly received magazines, audio CDs, audio cassettes, video games, clothing, comic books, theme parks, merchandise, and, of course, theatrical feature films.
  5. The 1981 and 1984 logos were impressive. But the most iconic logos in this network were the splat and lightbulb, which were considered the most fan-favorite for fans alike.
  6. At Universal Studios Florida, Nickelodeon had a Nicktoons-themed simulator ride, Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, which was replaced by Despicable Me Minion Mayhem in 2011, since Despicable Me became an instant success in 2010.
  7. It had its own original game shows, starting with Double Dare during Halloween 1986 (not to be confused with the short-lived 1976-77 CBS game show with the same name).
  8. It spawned lots of iconic and memorable shows.
  9. It had its Nick-exclusive slapstick-style sitcoms, including Clarissa Explains It All, iCarly, Drake & Josh, and All That.
  10. Back then, it preferred quality over quantity, as it actually cared about its viewers and didn't just air SpongeBob reruns.
  11. It had lots of iconic bumpers, most notably the beloved “Not just cartoons.. we’re NickToons!” song bumper.
  12. Many of its shows spawned popular internet memes and the network embraced it by making wonderful meme-based SpongeBob toys.
  13. It had its own animation studio company, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, which created many original television programs for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. and created many theatrical films that were distributed by Paramount Pictures and produced by Nickelodeon Movies.
  14. It had its very own television-taping company, Nickelodeon Studios, which doubled as an original family attraction at Universal Studios Florida, but sadly it was closed on April 30, 2005.
  15. It had its very own website, which launched in 1996.
  16. The network's international versions were good.

Bad Qualities

  1. The logo while still good, has been simplified in 2009, and looks nowhere near as good as the older ones from 90s and 2000s.
  2. The channel went massively went downhill since 2013, due to the release of absolutely horrible (and few average) shows, and movies, and haven't been recovered since.
  3. Even before 2013 there were lots of bad and mediocre shows and movies such as:
  4. Cyma Zarghami, the former president of Nickelodeon from 2006-2018, was pretty bad at doing her job as president.
    • She is also the reason why the 2010-2018 era of Nickelodeon was mediocre.
  5. They closed down Nickelodeon Studios in 2005.
  6. They haven't transition to HD Widescreen 16:9 for any of TV Shows until 2013, except for the nickcoms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012), SpongeBob SquarePants (when season 9 started airing in 2012), Planet Sheen and Fanboy & Chum Chum.
