Nun Massacre, also known as Night of the Nun, is a 2018 survival horror game developed by Puppet Combo. The game can be downloaded from Puppet Combo's Patreon and on Itch.io. In 2021, the game received a novelization. The same year in October, the game was released on Android and iOS mobile devices. On March 24, 2022, the game was released on PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch consoles. The game was later released on Xbox on May 31, 2022.

On May 31, 2022, Puppet Combo released a free content update called The Definitive Edition, introducing three additional storylines, new killers, as well as visual and performance improvements. The update was later released on June 2nd for home consoles.

Why It Rocks

  1. The game creates a tense and immersive horror atmosphere with its retro graphics, sound design, and unpredictable scares.
  2. Engaging Gameplay: Players must explore, solve puzzles, and avoid the deadly Nun, providing a challenging and engaging experience.
  3. The game features several different endings, adding replay value and encouraging players to uncover all possible outcomes.
  4. The free content update introduced new storylines, killers, and improvements, enhancing the overall game experience.
  5. The additional modes in the Definitive Edition, such as Factory, Circus, and Backrooms, offer unique and varied horror experiences.
  6. The game is available on multiple platforms, including PC, consoles, and mobile devices, making it accessible to a wide audience.
  7. The audio cues, including the heavy static indicating the Nun's proximity, heighten the tension and fear.
  8. The game's various storylines and endings, combined with the challenge of evading the Nun, provide significant replay value.
  9. Puppet Combo actively engages with the game's community, taking feedback and providing updates that enhance the overall experience.
  10. The game has a nostalgic appeal The retro aesthetic and gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of classic horror games, appealing to fans of the genre.

Bad Qualities

  1. Steep Difficulty: The game can be very challenging, which might be frustrating for some players.
  2. The retro-style graphics, while atmospheric, may not appeal to everyone and can sometimes hinder gameplay clarity.
  3. Some players may find the gameplay repetitive, especially when having to replay sections after dying.
  4. There have been reports of performance issues on certain platforms, affecting the overall gameplay experience.

Trivia

  • It is commonly believed that the Nun's appearance was inspired by Valak, the main antagonist of the 2018 horror film The Nun, which similarly takes the form of a nun while terrorizing a remote Catholic institution in the countryside. Despite the parallels, Ben Cocuzza initially stated that this was false, as he had been unaware of the movie during early development. While true, Cocuzza later said that he did take inspiration from The Nun's basic premise while working on a Power Drill Massacre sequel, eventually conceptualizing Nun Massacre and advertising it with regards to the movie, as seen in the majority of Puppet Combo's promotional social media posts under #TheNun, which was at least partially done due to the movie's massive pre-release hype, not unlike the several rip-off movies (The Bad Nun, The Curse of the Nun, etc.) released shortly before The Nun.
  • Ironically, Nun Massacre was similarly subject to shovelware copies, especially on mobile devices (Evil Nun, The Nun Game).
  • The story elements of Nun Massacre are similar to Silent Hill 2.
  • It was given the alternate name "Night of the Nun" just in case the notorious YouTube algorithm demonetized Let's Plays for containing "Massacre" in the title.
  • The game shares the same assets with Stay Out of the House and Christmas Massacre.
  • A Secret Mode was originally going to be added in a future update, which would replace The Nun with The Driller Killer. Unfortunately, this was never implemented and the update was later discarded. With the Definitive Edition, a mode featuring a killer based on the latter was added and can be seen as a fully realized, extended version of the initial concept.
  • Puppet Combo was originally working on the Power Drill Massacre sequel, but ended up cancelling it and developed it into Nun Massacre.
  • This is the first Puppet Combo game that was released on Android and iOS.
  • Presumably due to restrictions regarding "sensitive" material, the game was known exclusively as "Night of the Nun" during its initial release on Play Store before the title was changed.
  • This is the second Puppet Combo game released on consoles, the first one being Murder House.
  • At first, Puppet Combo tried to release the game on Xbox but was unable and only released it on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. On June 2nd, it was released on Xbox, just without the achievements.
  • In the Factory scenario of the Definitive Edition, the main character was voiced by The Sphere Hunter.
  • Puppet Combo once joked that if his Twitter account gets verified, he will make Nun Massacre set in space titled Nun X.
  • Puppet Combo mentioned that if he were to make a sequel to Nun Massacre, it would go strongly in a Giallo direction and the main character would be an English painter.
  • VHS Cover art of Nun Massacre was painted by Patrick Driscoll, who also painted some other Puppet Combo and TortureStar Video covers such as Murder House (Easter Ripper version), Night at the Gates of Hell, Bloodwash, and more.
