Oggy and the Cockroaches: The Movie (French: Oggy et les Cafards: Le Film) is a 2013 French animated anthology comedy film directed and written by Olivier Jean-Marie, that premiered in France on August 7, 2013, to May 20-7. The film is based on the series Oggy and the Cockroaches.

Why It's a Moonshot Movie

  1. The movie has an original plot and is what season 5 of the show wanted to be as it pays respectful tribute to past eras such as prehistoric and medieval.
  2. The concept on making an Oggy and the Cockroaches movie seems decent and this movie executed this concept greatly.
  3. Uses content from the show really well.
  4. The opening where Oggy chases the cockroaches underwater while evolving is funny. It is even repeated in the ending, thus making this movie an endless loop.
  5. It even references the Star Wars franchise with Jack and Oggy as the protagonists and Bob, Joey, Marky, and Dee Dee as the villains. It is also a great homage to Star Wars: A New Hope.
  6. The animation is great, with the Oggy-Wan Kenoggy animation being the best out of all of them due to being unique, finally using CGI animation, and really funny to watch.
    • Bob playing Darth Vader is also funny despite almost destroying a planet.
  7. Olivia is a much more better character in this movie as she had some good moments such as when she saved Oggy, who nurses him.
  8. The prehistoric segment, Oggy Magnon, is amazing as the scene where Joey sneezes and puts out the fire is really funny and the journey to get the fire back is really fun.
  9. Great soundtrack, even many of the songs, like La Danse des Chiens, are catchy.
  10. Oggy, Jack, and Olivia are also very likable as well as the cockroaches, which shows their awesome rivality in every segment.
  11. The medieval segment, Prince Oggy II (despite being the weakest of all the segments), has an interesting story on Oggy and Jack working together to try and succeed at quests from Oggy's father, a noble figure and king, who also defeated the detested cockroach king.
    • It even references the film Shrek when Oggy and Jack to go the castle to save Olivia.
  12. "The Incredible Jack Holmes & Oggy Watson" is also heartwarming and funny (despite the terrible ending) as it also has an interesting story on the cockroaches stealing the key and Oggy, Jack, and Bob try to get it back. It is also a great homage to Sherlock Holmes.
  13. At the last act of the movie, everything becomes three dimensional instead of two dimensional.
  14. The whole movie (as well as the opening and end credits) are faithful to the series.

Cockroached! Qualities

  1. Just like the TV show, the movie can have lots of violence at times.
  2. The movie bombed at the box office, grossing a total of $985,463, which ruined the movie's showing at the box office and caused it to be a box office disappointment as well as the sequel to get cancelled as well as other Xilam films.
  3. Bob is really unlikable in the ending of The Incredible Jack Holmes & Oggy Watson where he blames Oggy and Jack for the destruction of the clock tower although it was unintentional.
  4. The Village Chief is a bit unlikable as he blames Oggy for taking the fire out although it was Joey's fault (despite the cockroaches getting comeuppances at the end of the story) but thankfully, he redeems himself in the ending of the story.
  5. Marc du Pontavice isn't in the end title of the movie.
  6. Some gross-out moments, such as when Oggy revealed his stinky foot in the prehistoric segment.
  7. Despite WIAMM #14, the end credits, while good, is reused from any other Oggy and the Cockroaches episode as it could've been better. Also, the end credits after that end credits has no text but different pictures of Oggy in past variants.

Reception

Oggy and the Cockroaches: The Movie received mixed to good reviews by fans who watched the show and a 6.4/10 on IMDb. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 87% approval rating from audiences.

Jennifer Borget of Common Sense Media gave the film 2/5 stars, saying that "while it's intended to be a silly movie to get laughs with non-realistic violence, there's little substance beyond that, which could make parents question what aspects are sinking in for their kids."

Trivia

  • As mentioned in CQ #2, the movie was originally going to have a sequel as it was fully developed but it was cancelled due to the movie being a box office bomb. No video footage or screenshots of this movie has been released of 2023.
  • The ideas from the movie would eventually be inherited four years later into a new Season 5, in spite of counting as Jumping the shark, which also featured Oggy and the cockroaches being depicted in various time periods. Unlike the movie, Season 5 covers many more points in human history and features updated graphics.
  • There are 3 deleted scenes (The last 2 are chapters from the movie.) to be found in the home release.
