Plot
The game is set in a Nippon (Japan) based on Japanese folklore, and begins with a flashback to events 100 years prior to the game's present; the narrator describes how Shiranui, a pure white wolf, and Nagi, a swordsman, together fought the eight-headed demon Orochi to save Kamiki Village and the maiden Nami, Nagi's beloved. Shiranui and Nagi are unable to defeat Orochi, so they seal the demon away.
Why It Rocks Beautiful cel-shaded graphics and artistic design. Unique and original celestial brush weapon. Plot based on the Shinto religion. Three different weapons that have their use. Tight and beautiful controls. Gameplay inspired by The Legend of Zelda series. Balanced difficulty: not too easy, not to hard. Great soundtrack. Healthy amount of sidequests which add up to 40-60 hours to the gameplay experience. Epic adventure with an interesting story, as well as plot twists. Memorable characters, one of which is Susano. Many secrets and unlockables, which can be used in a New Game+. Awesome and epic boss battles. The final boss is both epic and AMAZING!!! Swift and exciting combat. Many customizable weapons as well as many different weapon types, such as glaives and swords. If you get all the Stread Beads, you can gain a very special reword in the New Game +. Bad Qualities The ink-based art style can start getting eye-straining after a while. Very slow pacing. While the bosses are fun, Orochi (while an epic boss) gets fought THREE TIMES!!! And while the battle is fun, Orochi is known as one of the longest boss battles in the game. The celestial brush can be very unreliable and sometimes even unresponsive due to turning a 3D plane into a flat 2D picture to draw on. It's also very hard to draw accurately using analog sticks in the PS2 version, thankfully that was fixed in the PlayStation 4 version. While the story is really engaging, if you sort of think about it, the plot does feel like three stories into one, not to mention they have their own type of villain, with the first part focusing on Amatarasue and Issun's character development and Orochi, the second part focusing on the weird mist, the Water Dragon problem and Nine-Tails, and the final part focusing on saving a village from a fierce snow storm and Yami, this was said by Somecallmejohnny. Tips In one of the Mole Digging Sub-Games, you can use the Cherry Bombs to catch the Mole Leader. Be shore you have at least 100 Demon Fangs, as there is an upgread that will restore your Ink Pouch much faster. Attacking enemies will give you Godhood skills, which will let you tank hits. Useing the whips will garinted faster Godhood levels. In the final part of Oni Island, you can use the Cherry Bomb to open up a hole, then use Vine to reach the race with Tobia without haveing to solve Blockhead's weakspot puzzle.
