Plot
Once, notorious pirate Gold Roger confessed on a his execution he hid a majestic tresure full of honor and pride in the infamous Grand Line, where no one left it alive. Pushed by his idol, Shanks, clumsy Monkey D. Luffy sets up sails to discovers the wonders of sea and the essence of adventure along with his pseudo-friends: elegant she-robber Nami, warlike swashbuckler Zoro, buffoon sharpshooter Usopp and the misunderstood cooker Sanji, to find the One Piece and becoming the King of Pirate.
Why It Will Still Become the King of the Pirates
- Afar from other shows of its own genre, like the unluckier live-action adaptaments of Death Note, Cowboy Bebop and Saint Seiya, It stays faithful towards the original manga and the anime's first episodes. Even proves Netflix can improve itself about its live-action series based on animes/mangas (even this can be considered reasonable since the original author is involved in).
- The sets and the costumes are amazing, especially for a tv show, and also faithful to the source material. The Going Merry, for example, looks she came out directly from the anime as how colorful and cartoonish is, and though our principal cast's outfits may not be identical to the manga's, they're still cool, with Zoro's pretty cool.
- Some designs even exceed the manga/anime's ones. The most remarkable is Buggy the pirate clown, as his face and outfit are more scarier than the source's and looks more like a real horror clown.
- Great voice acting from all the cast present. Despite the blackwashing, Jacob Romero Gibson does an excellent portray of Usopp, which states blackwashing cannot be so bad sometimes.
- The characters, despite having an unhappier tone than the source, are still likable .
- Even the old antagonists appear and still are memorable, like Buggy and Arlong.
- The new dark tone is good and perfectly fits with themes of war and pirates, especially for an anime like One Piece, as now battles features more gore and bloody scars and some scenes (like Arlong changing his teeth while battling against Luffy) are sweetly disturbing. Is also good because of how it balance well with some carefree humor (mostly from Usopp, Buggy and Luffy).
- It's also a good way to have to include vulgar language and swear words, even used decently without becoming annoying.
- Thanks to the dark tone, the emotive scenes are more heartbreaking than ever, where the characters express the most of them proving out more emotions than the anime. Zoro, Usopp and Nami's backstories are the best examples.
- Despite not being particularly sad, Luffy's flashbacks when was young near Shanks and crew are very moving and reasonable, as he tries to diLsmiss his grandpa to become a pirate yet gets tortured by the latter.
- The CGI is very cinematic and realistic.
- Fighting scenes are funny and enjoyable, and the add of gore simply makes them more moved.
- Uproariously dialogues like:
- "Gum Gum, Piistoool!",
- "Welcome to our shitty restaurant",
- "F**king clown".
- Complessively, it's a great way to bring back the first old episodes and it's very refreshing for the new arrivals, as you don't need to love the manga/anime to love this.
Bad Qualities
- Some CGI effects can appear bad, unfinished or simply give out goosebumps since how they are uncanny. In particular, the Devil Fruits' abilities on Luffy and Buggy can be way too odd or creepy because both skins appear too fake. Furthermore, after Luffy punches and detach off Buggy's head, this last starts to talk and float in a very disturbing manner.
- Despite its loyalty to the original sources, there're still hiccups here and there:
- First, all the crew's outfits (except Nami and Zoro) are wrong:
- Luffy does not wear sandals as he did before for some reason, and does not have a scarf around his waist.
- Sanji does not wear an inner blue shirt.
- Usopp is the worst offender here: his design has literally nothing to do with the OG. Plus he does not have a Pinocchio nose as his original counterpart had (which is hypocritical since Buggy has a real clown red ball nose).
- Nami has blue eyes instead of orange.
- Like Usopp, even Nojiko went blackwashed too. However, is not so bad since her original counterpart had a little darker skin tone, and her design is still faithful.
- Arlong is much lower and wears a less summer-like outfit.
- Jeff, Sanji's mentor, looks more like a viking character.
- First, all the crew's outfits (except Nami and Zoro) are wrong:
- Some fans could dislike the new tone and the swearing.
