Open Season is a 2006 American computer-animated comedy film directed by Jill Culton, Roger Allers and Anthony Stacchi from a screenplay by Steve Bencich and Ron J. Friedman. The film stars the voices of Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher, Gary Sinise, Debra Messing, Billy Connolly, Jon Favreau, Georgia Engel, Jane Krakowski, Gordon Tootoosis and Patrick Warburton.

Plot

Boog, a domesticated grizzly bear, gets sent to a forest and he teams up with a one-antlered deer named Elliot and several other forest animals to help find his way back home and defeat the hunters.

Why This Season is Open

1. Good animation for 2006.
2. It started the legacy of Sony Pictures Animation, who would later go on to create other great films like Surf's Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the more unfortunate side known as The Emoji Movie.
3. The titular protagonist Boog is pretty likable, funny & interesting.
4. Boog and Beth's relationship with each other is very emotional.
5. Boog & Elliot's growing friendship throughout the film is somewhat funny & interesting to see. (Even if it's overly silly & pretty predictable)
6. Shaw is a very enjoyable and intimidating if crazy antagonist.
7. The film features several comedic moments such as the scene where Boog and Elliot burst into Puni-Mart and throw a wild party and Elliot's lullaby to Boog.
8. Speaking of the humor, it's on point & is delivered in a silly manner as it is humorously exaggerated or just funny (even if there are some tongue in cheek jokes like Shaw hitting Elliot with his car at night, but somehow still delivers correctly anyway)
9. A lot of the other animal characters are also entertaining that they can steal the show such as Mr. Weenie, the ducks Serge and Deni, Buddy the Porcupine, and especially McSquizzy.
10. Great soundtrack.
11. A lot of fast paced and thrilling action scenes such as the fight with the hunters and the flood sequence.
12. The backgrounds are very colorful and appealing.
13. The story is executed in a decently emotional & semi-silly way. (Especially coming from the same creators of the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs franchise, but not as great as that movie)

Bad Qualities

1. Some very gross, lowbrow & cringey moments like Boog vomiting, some childish humor, Boog twerking a couple of times, and Elliot pooping onscreen.
2. Elliot's dim-witted, immature & moronic nature can get pretty annoying since he was the problem for Boog in the first place and the movie weirdly tries to make him look likable when he was rather the quite the opposite in comparison to Boog.
3. The animation can be uncanny at times due to when it was made (though that doesn't mean it's bad, but looks quite off even for 2006 standards).
4. The character models can look pretty unappealing & not so good like the distorted looking humans (e.g especially Shawn) for example along with some bizarrely designed animals.
5. Some dark and creepy scenes such as Boog stumbling across Shaw's cabin with several animals mounted on the wall as well as the scene where Boog was trying to stop Elliot from ruining his show which makes the audience think that he’s trying to kill him. There is also a scene right after the animals win the battle, boog becomes perplexed and disoriented in the fog where frightening music plays, right before Shaw appears.
6. Some not so good moments with the writing and making the movie seem insanely weird, humor wise or not
7. Most of the characters (the animals and the people in particular) are either very dumb or insane, or even both combined.
8. The voice acting, while not bad, could’ve done better.
9. The story can be cliché and predictable as it is highly similar to Madagascar and Over the Hedge (another animated film from 2006), except a much more weirder version of the two.
