Out of Jimmy's Head is a live-action/animated television series that aired on Cartoon Network from 2007-2008. It is based on the TV movie Re-Animated. The show is live-action with animated characters just like the movie.
Plot
Teenager Jimmy Roberts has a brain transplant and ends up with famous cartoonist Milt Appleday's frozen brain full of animated characters. Jimmy sees all the characters in his everyday life and his best friend Craig's older sister Robin is a huge Appleday fan and the prettiest girl in school. There's just one problem... Milt's son Sonny is trying to steal the brain back to pass the art off as his own.
Why It Yoinked Itself Out of Our Heads
- Unfunny, annoying, and stupid jokes, which are often gross-out jokes, toilet humor, and fetish fuel.
- Cliché plots that don't improve their TV movie's predecessor.
- The cartoon characters have no important roles in any of the episodes. You could take them out and nothing would change.
- Horrible acting, even from actors such as Bill Dwyer and Dominic Janes.
- Some characters are downright hateful and indeed stereotypical. Here are a few examples:
- Jimmy is a boy who you won't put in middle school in real life. While he doesn't stammer as much as he did in the film, he still keeps his "love-struck stammering" characteristic when he talks to Robin and it's still very cliche.
- Craig enjoys using Jimmy, his best friend, for cash and his selfish benefits most of the time. Despite being toned down a little, he seems to learn nothing from Re-Animated since he is still acting like the same old talkative dork who tries way too hard to be cool and is still full of himself. Except now, he's much dumber and is now written as the 'comic-relief type of character as this dynamic between him and Jimmy, which is executed in an extremely unfunny way and always ends up falling flat.
- Robin has become much blander and is a lot less likable than she was in Re-Animated.
- Sonny Appleday has become more disturbing and pathetic than his original portrayal in Re-Animated. He is also inexplicably still alive despite Yancy "zapping" him out of existence in the film.
- Mr. Roberts has become even more childish and immature than he originally was, he often seeks enjoyment in humiliating Jimmy and other kids at school with a gleeful smile. In one episode, he can't even tell his son apart from a pathetically obvious robotic facsimile of him created by Sonny.
- You'd think that the show wants you to hate him, but his "antics" are meant to be viewed as funny and charming, but they are anything but that.
- There is an overused horrible laugh track that plays often in the last 13 episodes. The story gets irritating after a while because of this laugh track.
- Robin and Craig Wheeler are "blackwashed" for no reason (either it's lazy recasting). They were originally Asian in the film, especially Craig.
- Downright silly premise, even more so than in the original film.
- It's never explained how Jimmy can automatically see cartoons. This is mostly because they expect the audience to have previously watched Re-Animated to understand why Jimmy even has that ability to begin with.
- Some plots make no sense. One episode for example involved Jimmy having a rollercoaster in his house, and it's about as weird as you'd expect it to be.
- The fact that Jimmy's mother is an astronaut and his adopted sister is an alien doesn't really have any purpose in the story and only seems to exist for the sake of being bizarre. If Jimmy's mother had a normal job, and if his sister was just a human, it would not affect the story.
- This show kick-started what's known as Cartoon Network's first dark age in the late 2000s and started the trend of live-action shows on a network focusing on animated programs, such as the infamous CN Real block in 2009, that were mostly mediocre and forgettable.
- Though it was actually Big Bag that was Cartoon Network's first live-action show, not even that show would be this bad.
Redeeming Qualities
- The first 7 episodes had no laugh track.
- The show has a pretty catchy theme song.
- Decent art style and animation.
- Some funny moments, such as Golly screaming "WHAT?!" after Crocco says he's not his best friend, screaming "YOU CALL THIS LIGHTLY TOASTED?!", and especially Sonny whenever he is funny.
Reception
This show received mostly negative reviews. It has a 2.3/ on IMDb and 2.2 on tv.com. Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times wrote "Cast aside all that clutter, though, and this is just another show about a seventh-grader trying to fit in. It’s also a show with a sly sense of humor when it’s not being self-consciously frenetic", but praised Bil Dwyer for his comedic role. It is considered to be one of the worst Cartoon Network shows ever.
Cartoon Network had little faith in the show. Due to the show's bad ratings and the Writer's Guild of America 2007 strike, the show went on hiatus before being abruptly canceled after 20 episodes. After the series' end, Cartoon Network deleted all references to it from their websites and never discussed nor acknowledged this show again, at least until 2018 when Golly had a cameo role in the OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes crossover special "Crossover Nexus", alongside a small cameo with Dolly in the 20th-anniversary mural from 2012. Cartoon Network's sister channel Boomerang even refused to air this show. The series isn't even available on Blu-Ray and DVD in the United States and has never resurfaced on HBO Max. However, a DVD release of this show was released exclusively in the United Kingdom, but it only contained three episodes.
Trivia
- Due to Cartoon Network disregarding and removing the show from all digital streaming websites, as well as only allowing the first 3 episodes to be released on DVD (as mentioned above), it was considered to be lost media, since most episodes of the show were very rare, if not borderline impossible to find. As of 2022, however, all episodes of the show have been found and re-uploaded onto YouTube by fans. Unfortunately, only 10 of the show's episodes are available to watch in their original English audio, while the other 10 episodes can only be watched in foreign language dubs, such as Romanian and Italian. Before it resurfaced on YouTube, it was called "Schizophrenic Jimmy" because of the premise.
- It was the only Cartoon Network series to be affected by the 2007 Writer's Guild Strike.
- After the series ended, both Dominic Janes (the actor who played Jimmy) and Rhea Lando (the actress who played Yancy (Jimmy's sister)) flopped in their careers, and to date, they have no acting credits after 2009 and 2010 respectively.
