"Papa's Wedding Day" is an episode of The Smurfs.
Summary
Flowerbell poses as Papa Smurf's love interest to imprison him with Lord Balthazar to earn her freedom. But after she reads the poem Papa made for her, she and the Smurfs rescue Papa from Balthazar.
Why It Rocks
- This episode focuses on the village leader at his most likable, who has fallen in love with Flowerbell and turns out to be all a trick to spare her life in giving up his.
- Lord Balthazar is an interesting villain and his castle has an interestingly dark atmosphere, a callback to The Smurfs Springtime Special.
- Flowerbell reveals in remorse that this was all a trap to capture Papa Smurf and spare her life, claiming that she was afraid of Lord Balthazar. Despite her Mae West-esque mannerisms earlier in the episode, she does show some character rather than being just a pixie caricature.
- Funny moments, such as the Smurfs trying to sabotage the wedding so that Papa Smurf and Flowerbell will never be married.
- Good animation and voice acting.
- "When You're Not As Young As Your Think You Are (When You Act As Old As You Think You Are)" is a pretty good love song, despite the censor with the bridge collapsing.
- Papa Smurf recolors his beard brown (revealed to be his original beard color, which proves to be true in the episode "Papa's Family Album").
- At the end, Papa Smurf and Flowerbell remain close friends. Back at the village, the Smurfs happily eat the wedding cake together and sing a song before it cuts to a further view of the Smurf Village.
Bad Qualities
- This episode has very few animation errors, such as a Smurf who dumps his trumpet on Harmony and when he does, he slightly resembles Clumsy.
- The way the other Smurfs crack jokes about Papa Smurf's age can be pretty insulting (depending on your view).
- Flowerbell unfortunately never appears in another episode again, wasting some potential.
Trivia
- As mentioned above, this episode is Flowerbell's only appearance on the show. She disappears afterwards.
