Peep and the Big Wide World is an animated children's television series created by the late-canadian animator Kaj Pindal and based on the 1988 short film Peep and the Big Wide World produced by the National Film Board of Canada, which itself is based on the 1962 short film The Peep Show, also produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The series premiered on April 12, 2004, on Discovery Kids and on TLC as part of their Ready Set Learn children's block, and on the same day on TVOKids and PBS Kids. It was produced by WGBH Boston and 9 Story Entertainment, in association with TVOntario and Discovery Kids and is distributed by Alliance Atlantis.
Plot
The series follows the adventures of a trio of birds named Peep (a chicken), Chirp (a Robin), and Quack (a Duck) as they investigate and explore the world around them. Following the 9-minute animated segment, there is a 2-minute live-action segment with children exploring and demonstrating the same topic presented in the animated segment.
Why It's A Big Wide World
- It teaches viewers math, nature and basic science concepts in a way that is both fun and exciting at the same time without coming across as boring or uninteresting.
- Fun and great characters and adventures.
- Good and funny memorable moments, especially from Quack the Duck.
- Catchy theme song, written by Taj Mahal.
- Peep is such a sweet and innocent character as he explores the big wide world with his friends, Chirp and Quack.
- There is a two-part episode called "An inconvenient Tooth" that is dedicated to Earth Day.
- Creative, while simple, title cards.
- Simple, yet well done animation. Very similar animation to Ed, Edd n Eddy. as well.
- Well-done narration courtesy of Joan Cusack.
- Cute character designs.
- Can be found entertaining to a older audience.
Bad Qualities
- Some characters can be annoying such as a female pink Duck also named Quack from the episodes "Quack Quack" and "One Duck Too Many".
- Some moments are more groan-inducing than funny.
- Some episodes are boring to watch, mediocre ("The Road Not Taken"), disturbing and scary ("Peep Crosses The Road," "Things That Go Peep in the Night") or just plain horrible ("The Sounds of Silence," "Quack, Quack," "One Duck Too Many")
- Chirp's snobbish attitude can make her unlikeable at times, reminding you of Stingy from LazyTown, Lincoln Loud from The Loud House, or even Garfield. In a way, she could be a combination of the three, even if she predates Stingy and Lincoln.
