Peggle is a casual puzzle videogame developed by PopCap Games. It was released worldwide on February 27, 2007, for PC, and was later ported to Mac, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and other platforms.

Why It's An Ode to Joy

  1. The game mechanic, a mix of Pachinko and Breakout, is original and addictive.
  2. Simple but colorful graphics and backgrounds.
  3. Ten awesome Peggle Masters with awesome superpowers, for example:
    • Bjorn who shows where the ball will go.
    • Splork who makes an explosion.
    • Lord Cinderbolt who launchs a Fire Ball.
    • Master Hu who improves your shot.
  4. Pleasant classical music that sounds at the most precise moments.
  5. Is funny to play with other people in Duel Mode.
  6. In some studies it was even found that Peggle, along with other PopCap games helps kids with ADHD improve their attention span and memory.

Bad Qualities

  1. Some levels are very difficult and frustrating, especially Stage 11 and Challenges.
  2. Getting big scores is difficult too.
  3. The gameplay is sometimes slow, but that can be fixed with the right mouse button.
  4. Unlike PopCap's other important games, it does not have original soundtracks.

Trivia

  • The opening theme is Morning, Peer Gynt Suite No.1, composed by classical musician Edvard Grieg.
  • The game itself gained a very small cult following in early 2024 as memes about the game started to surround online.

Reception

Peggle Deluxe was very well received by critics. Alec Meer of Eurogamer found the game to be a “constant series of rewards” in gameplay, graphics, and audio that would continue to satisfy the player; Gus Mastrapa of The A.V. Club considered the game “comfort food for the omnivorous gamer”, with its ability to draw even hardcore gamers into its fantasy visuals.

Upon its release on Xbox Live Arcade, Peggle was the top-selling game on the service for two weeks, and remained in the top ten applications for several weeks afterward. Within a month, over 100,000 players were listed on the Xbox leaderboards for Peggle, though this number also includes players who purchased the game through the PopCap Arcade Volume 2 retail package, which contained the game as well.
