Penny Foolish is the second episode of the sixth season of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Synopsis
An obsessed Mr. Krabs must find a penny when SpongeBob found it across the street.
Cheapskate Qualities
- The concept of Mr. Krabs being fixated on a single penny and frantically searching for it comes across as uninteresting and somewhat contrived.
- It presents an ironic contradiction to all previous episodes featuring Mr. Krabs and pennies, solely for the purpose of plot convenience.
- Some believe Mr. Krabs' flanderization began with "Krabby Land", but it was actually this particular episode that marked the start. In it, he becomes excessively fixated on a single penny he thought SpongeBob found on the street, going to great lengths to get it back, including constructing a movie theater, staging a play, and even breaking into his employee's house.
- In contrast to most episodes where Mr. Krabs' fixation on money is a source of humor, this particular episode depicts it as akin to an addiction or mental illness. His compulsion is so strong that he succumbs to it; round objects trigger him to see pennies, distracting him from reality.
- The episode is a rehash of the Season 3 episode “One Krabs Trash” as both of these episodes focus on Mr. Krabs becoming obsessed with taking something that belongs to SpongeBob with the only difference being the item in SpongeBob’s possession (the item in the aforementioned episode was a soda drinking hat)
- Half-Bad ending: As it happened, the ''penny'' SpongeBob discovered was in fact a damp and soggy paper bill, mistaken at first for a piece of gum. Meanwhile, outside SpongeBob's home, Mr. Krabs, gripped by his fixation, continues to dig haphazardly in the front yard, hoping to find the penny.
Penny Qualities
- People hearing Mr. Krabs act like a dolphin was funny.
- "I would like to donate a penny." "You would?" "If I only had one!"
- Half-Good ending: At least Mr. Krabs told SpongeBob what happened at the beginning of this episode, near at the end.
