Perman: Enban wo Torikaese!! is an action game, developed by Tamtex and published by Irem, which was released in Japan in 1990. The game consiste of 6 stages.

Why It Rocks

  1. The controls are very good and responsive; in fact, they are as good as Doraemon: Nobita no Dorabian Night on PC-Engine, which shows how high the quality of the game is.
  2. Great graphics for a 1990 Famicom game, It's on par with Batman: The Video Game or even Super Mario Bros. 3.
  3. The soundtrack is decent, at least it's much better than the second game, which had an awful soundtrack, especially since that game was released in 1991.
  4. The game had balanced difficulty in the platforming stage; it's neither too hard nor too easy, and the boss fights were unbalanced in difficulty and even in general.
  5. While the boss fights are very difficult and luck-based, you can sometimes call the friends of either Perman or Bobby, and they can help you win the battle as some of them do a lot of damage.
  6. While bad, the boss fights are surprisingly creative for a platformer.
  7. The game is faithful to the manga and even the animated series.
  8. It's spawned one great sequel that is an improvement over this, including better graphics, better gameplay (in 2D only), and a bit more length.

Bad Qualities

  1. The hitbox can be off sometimes, depending on your view.
  2. You can't fly, even with Perman himself, unlike the animated series and the manga; thankfully, the sequel had this feature.
  3. The game is too short, lasting only 30 to 40 minutes to finish.
  4. The music from the third level can feel like it's been stolen from Mega Man, particularly the Fire Man stage, where this music sounds familiar.
  5. Some levels are almost impossible if you take the wrong characters; it's mostly Booby that you have to pick when you have trouble with Perman.
  6. You can't play with some characters, such as Payan or Pako; thankfully, the sequel lets you play them if you want before you start a level.
  7. The boss fights, while creative, are luck-based, and if you lose at them, you have to restart a level all over again, which is not only frustrating, but bad overall. The same can be said for the mini games before them.
