Peter Pan (not to be confused with the Disney film of the same name) is a "video game" created by the infamous Phoenix Games for the PlayStation 2. The animated film was made by the now-defunct Polish company Longsoft Multimedia, which specialized in developing games and short budget animations. The game went viral as one of the compilations from one of the most infamous studios and is still considered one of the worst PlayStation 2 games and games for kids to this day. The game also became infamous for having one of the worst covers of all time.
Plot
The plot centers around three young children who go on an adventure with Peter Pan to Neverland when their parents leave to go to the Ball, but when the evil Captain Hook kidnaps Tiger Lily, Peter Pan must rescue Tiger Lily and stop Captain Hook in his tracks.
Gameplay
As in other compilations, the mini-games are not complicated and have similar rules to each other, such as arranging a puzzle or matching two of the same elements. There is also a few minute video available.
Why It Has No Great Joy
- This game is a rip off of the Disney's film Peter Pan, even the movie's plot and some of the character designs are similar to said game. It's not hard to guess that this is a cheap cash grab based on one of Disney's most famous movies.
- Much like the previous six installments, this "game" is not really a game, just a compilation collection of mini-games and a movie as if the developers lacked creativity and created a few minigames instead of even an adventure or action game.
- As with all other Phoenix Games compilations, all mini-games are boring and repetitive because they either consist of making a picture of a screenshot from a "movie" or matching two of the same elements.
- Much like Snow White and the 7 Clever Boys, the box art is very misleading; the box art shows the characters rendered in 3D, but the game (along with its movie) is actually in 2D.
- The box art itself looks bad, as the model used for Peter Pan looks like something out of the 3D animated movie, An Elf's Story, the background is stolen from Kingdom Hearts and there is a random bird standing on top of the logo in the front who never appears anywhere in the movie.
- Also much like The Dalmatians, the movie itself has awful animation, looking like something out of an early 1980's cartoon (give Snow White and the 7 Clever Boys credit for having passable animation), the characters also look scary and look like they've been leaked from an early 20's animation and have been colored or even painted on a piece of paper and they look like a characters from Zelda's CDI games.
- One example is that the "animation" and "model" of the ball is simply an image that moves from top to bottom and back again and again and again.
- The story is very confusing to follow, as everything happens at random for no apparent reason and without proper explanation as if story was being written on the knee without staring at the knee itself.
- Many errors are present in this movie because a lot of 3D models go through each other and the animation is missing at times.
- Bad voice acting; due to the fact that the entire film is voiced by the narrator, all of the characters sound exactly the same. To add insult to injury, when the characters talk to each other, the narrator tries to do multiple voices, making it almost impossible to know which character is talking to who (unlike Dalmatians 3, whereas the voice acting was also bad, but at least the voices were different) as if the developers didn't have the money to hire more actors and they hired only one and made her change her tone while speaking so that no one would notice that only one person did the voice.
- Awful lip-syncing, as the voice actors say things that don't match the way the characters move their lips when they talk as if the real dialogues had been muted and replaced by others.
- There are also times where the narrator will either be too slow or too fast in his narration making it sometimes hard to understand and other times boring to the viewer.
- Poor sound quality, as in the opening cutscene static can be heard (though it might have been raining) which clearly shows that the "movie" was not tested at all and they could not match the sound well to the situation.
- Much like Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, there are times where the characters will awkwardly pause for no reason as if they were so scared of something that they would lose control over their bodies or become partially paralyzed.
- The menu is badly designed because you don't know where a function leads.
- Sound recycling, the sound used when Peter Pan moves his foot with his shadow on it is the exact same sound used when Gex (the protagonist of the Gex Trilogy) jumps on his tail which is not only a textbook example of creators' laziness but also plagiarism from other games just to find a shortcut.
- The word "Green" gets reused multiple times which generally becomes irritating very quickly and makes you want to turn off the movie.
- Weird dialog from some of the characters. One notable example is the line said by Peter Pan when he is describing Captain Hook: "They're left by Captain Hook, who likes settling accounts.". Does that mean he's a stockbroker/banker? The developers didn't even seem to check the coherence of sentences and came up with any kind of sentences as long as there were any dialogues.
- As mentioned above, the background behind the pirate ship is just Destiny Islands ripped straight from Kingdom Hearts which may be considered plagiarism and is generally a copyright infringement.
Redeeming Qualities
- The game can be considered so bad it's good like all other Phoenix Games compilations due to the terrible animation and voice acting.
- Captain Hook's model on the boxart seems to appear decent after all, unlike other fable characters that resemble living corpses.
Reception
The game, though similar to other Phoenix Games games, was never noticed by critics, was widely publicized by online reviewers from whom the game received overwhelmingly negative reviews, and was considered one of the worst games for children as well as one of the worst games on PlayStation 2 and even considered one of the worst games of all time. The game was also reviewed by many YouTubers like Caddicarus who were also critical of the game compilation and mocked it for its flaws.
