These are games that wanted to be half a video game and half a movie, something that almost never works because movies and games don't mix well. The result is usually boring games where you barely do anything and are forced to watch overly long cutscenes before any gameplay. In some cases, the games simply have no gameplay whatsoever.

These games also overuse quick time events (where cinematic cutscenes blend into gameplay) and cinematic music and have certain off-topic cutscenes as well as several movie clichés like flashbacks.

It should be noted, however, that there are very few examples of FMV games that were praised, such as Phantasmagoria, or The 7th Guest.
