Phantom Planet is the twelfth and thirteenth episode of the third season of Danny Phantom, as well as the fifty-second/penultimate and fifty-third/final episode overall. This serves as the series finale.
Synopsis
When Plasmius' new ghostbuster team outclasses Danny in the field, the boy decides to remove his powers and retire, unaware of an approaching massive asteroid threatening Earth.
Bad Qualities
- Vlad is outrageously out of character in this episode. His entire plan is not only nonsensical and unrealistic, but rather pointless, considering that he's a billionaire and mayor of Amity Park.
- The plot is very inconsistent.
- The pacing is too fast, making it abruptly move from one place to another.
- Poor writing and dialogue.
- The Masters' Blasters, while having cool designs, serve pretty much no purpose in this episode other than to humiliate and outmatch Danny.
- The running gag where Danny loses his jumpsuit is forced and annoying, especially considering that he can just turn invisible.
- There are little-to-no fight scenes in this finale, which is really disappointing. Also, Danny and Vlad's final battle only lasted for 49 seconds, and even then, that's rushed.
- There are many plot holes.
- How did Vlad have enough time to assemble the Masters' Blasters before Danny and his friends make it back to Earth?
- How did the ghost portal strip Danny of his ghost powers?
- How were Danny and Jazz able to bail their parents out of prison?
- How was there enough time to build the transfer device when in real life, would have took months or even years?
- Why did ecto-ranium suddenly exist when it was never even mention in the show?
- How and why did Tucker, an underaged teenager, become mayor of Amity Park?
- Danny and Sam getting together feels forced and completely out of the blue.
- No one said or did anything when Danny revealed his identity to the world.
- Team Phantom criticizing Danny for removing his ghost powers is not only out of character but a little mean-spirited. Plus, Sam never received her comeuppance for her action, nor does she apologize to Danny.
- Danny convincing the other ghosts in the Ghost Zone to help him in time is considered a HUGE Deus Ex-Machina.
- Lazy ending where Danny decides to miss his own ceremony to be alone with Sam where they confess their feelings for each other, and it' not really executed in a super natural way. Not to mention that it has a bunch of random plot points thrown in out of nowhere like Tucker inexplicably becoming the new mayor of Amity Park.
- Even though there are no major cliffhangers, there are unfinished plot points and unanswered questions, making the series feel incomplete.
Good Qualities
- The concept of Danny saving the planet by turning it intangible is great, despite how badly executed it is.
- Jack had finally saw Vlad's true personality after he revealed himself in front of the entire world.
- Vlad also received his comeuppance.
- The animation and voice acting are as good as usual.
- Sam and Danny getting together is kind of romantic despite being out of the blue.
- Despite the unanswered questions, there were still some loose ends wrapped up in this finale.
