Pikmin 2 is a 2004 real time strategy developed and published by Nintendo for the GameCube home video game console. It is the direct sequel to the 2001 game Pikmin and is the second game in the Pikmin series. It was rereleased on the Wii as the New Play Control series. In 2023, Nintendo announced that Pikmin and Pikmin 2 would be ported to the Nintendo Switch in HD form.

Why It Rocks

  1. Introduces three new Pikmin types with the three from the first game returning. The three new Pikmin types are Purple Pikmin who have the ability to ground pound other enemies to stun them, and have the strength of 10 Pikmin, White Pikmin which are immune to poison and can see underground to dig for treasure, and Bulbmin which are immune to any hazard. Yellow Pikmin are given an immunity to electricity.
  2. Pikmin AI and behavior is massively improved. Pikmin follow orders like picking up items a lot more smoothly, will maneuver around walls to avoid getting stuck, and recover a lot more quickly from tripping.
  3. Also introduced in this game is dual captain gameplay with Olimar and newcomer Louie, and in the later half of the game, the president of Hocotate Freight.
  4. Instead of collecting ship parts, this time you are collecting treasure to pay off a 10,000 poko debt for Hocotate Freight. And you can still collect treasure in the later half of the game.
  5. No longer is there a 30-day time limit as you can take as long as you want to complete the game.
  6. Introduces caves that you can use to go underground to collect treasure and the time limit stops whenever you go in one, The caves are also randomly generated, meaning that the floors will be different every playthrough.
  7. Lots of mods to download! However, you need to have Dolphin Emulator or some emulator for PC or mobile.
  8. The treasure names are very creative.
  9. The ship in this game (the Hocotate Ship) can be very funny.
  10. Challenge mode in this game can be played in co-op.
  11. The four areas ( The Valley of Repose, The Awakening Wood, The Perplexing Pool, and the Wistful Wild) are very fun and opened to explore.
  12. Just like the first game, the musics are fun and well done to listen to, the most notable being the Title Menu and the Area Overview.
  13. Great graphics that improve upon the original. The Nintendo Switch version improves by using the entire game in HD, making the graphics much cleaner.
  14. Just like the first game, Pikmin 2 also got a Wii version that has new pointer controls.
  15. The Piklopedia, where you can view profiles on all of the games enemies. Olimar gives scientific notes about the enemies, While Louie discusses how he would cook them.

Bad Qualities

  1. The newly introduced Purple Pikmin, while great, are severely overpowered and make the combat incredibly unbalanced.
  2. The bomb rocks can no longer be used, as they are now considered hazards. Luckily they became useable again in Pikmin 3.
  3. There is an impossible layout with the random cave generator where you can't get a treasure due to it being in an impossible spot.
  4. Unlike other Pikmin games, this one focuses more on Enemy battles than tricks, puzzles and strategies, especially as this game introduced many new enemies.
  5. Due to the copyright that Nintendo bought to place the treasures, but with a registered trademark, such as Courage Reactor, which is just a Duracell battery and other objects (or Treasures like Olimar, Louie and The President call them) having another company's trademark expired after years, the Nintendo Switch version had to change the texture and made it a bit generic, although it was still good and detailed, inspired by real packaging.

Reception

The game receives critical acclaim by both critics and players, on Metacritic the game have a score of 90/100 which make the highest rated mainline Pikmin games.
