Pokémon: The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon is a mini-movie that serves as a 10th Anniversary Special for the third season of Pokemon.
Summary
When a scientist's Pokemon Mirage system goes roughed and cause all of the Mirage Pokemon to go berserk, Ash and his friend must find out who's behind it.
Why It Sucks
- This mini-movie is kind of mean-spirited, and also a joke to the 10th anniversary of the franchise.
- The whole special is literally a re-hash of Pokemon: The First Movie, right down to having Mewtwo as one of the main villains, new versions of Pokemon and Mew as an allie.
- The twist of Master of Mirage Pokemon being Dr. Yung is too obvious of a twist.
- Loads of unnecessary filler.
- Many moments in this mini-movie can get way too dark (even for Pokemon standards), for examples.
- There's a scene were Ash's Pikachu gets tortured in a rack until Professor Oak tells the Master of Mirage Pokemon the code.
- Mirage Mew literary gets beaten to a pulp by Mirage Mewtwo...while squealing in pain.
- Despite Brock being in this mini-movie, he does not help out in this special, in fact, he doesn't even participate in the final battle agents Mirage Mewtwo.
- The entire special is literary set in a castle with no new areas being seen.
- Unexplained plot-holes:
- Instead of Ash and his friends investigating the castle, why doesn't anyone just call the police? They have Officer Jenny, she can arrest the criminal.
- How on God's green Earth did Professor Oak get a Dragonite?
- Early on in the mini-movie, it is shown that Mirage Pokemon can not be harm by any means, but near the end of the special, Mirage Mewtwo (despite being one of Dr. Yung's most powerful Mirage Pokemon) gets defeat in one hit by Ash's Pikachu's Volt Tackle.
- Dr. Yung is WAY too dark to be an antagonist of a Pokemon species, an example: he tortures Pikachu until Professor Oak tells him the code.
- Team Rocket's appearance here feels pointless, and they serve nothing more then filler.
- The climax is very bland and drags on way too long, its literary nothing more then the Team's Pokemon getting overpowered by Mirage Mewtwo until Mirage Mew stuns Mirage Mewtwo enough for Pikachu to defeat Mirage Mewtwo with Volt Tackle.
- Due to its darker nature, this whole special feels more like something out of another Anime show like Dragon Ball Z, not something out of Pokemon.
- The characters are beyond stupid, one example is after Ash's Pikachu defeats Mirage Mewtwo. Instead of Professor Oak having Dr. Yung arrested by the cops, He lets Dr. Yung go off scot-free while he goes in his castle that has trembled down.
- The Master of Mirage Pokemon is a very out of place villain, and feels like a rejected villain from a Marvel show, or comic.
- Despite Pokemon: The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon being a tenth Anniversary Special of the Pokemon franchise, its poorly received in the story structure. Nether Ash or his friends talk about the adventure with Mirage Pokemon, Dr. Yung (even tho he's still alive) does not return in later series, Mirage Mew (despite being "promise" to return) does not re-appear in the series either, Professor Oak's Dragonite does not re-appear in the series and the concept or idea of Mirage Pokemon never gets brought up again.
- The voices in the English dub are a mixed bag here. Ash sounds alright with Sarah Natochenny voicing her, but Jamie Peacock sounds she isn't even trying as him. May's voice sounds alright for her, but sounds a lot more mature than the voice given by Veronica Taylor. Misty's voice, though not as good as the original, is somewhat passable.
Redeeming Qualities
- Thankfully, the whole mini-movie is non-canon.
- The idea of the mini-movie is interesting, but here it is poorly executed.
- "Mewtwo Reutrns" is a much better mini Pokémon movie, despite being a whole hour.
- Mirage Mew is a likable character.
- The action scenes are decent.
- Great animation and voice acting, both Japanese and English.
