Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon is a Dungeon Crawler game and the fourth installment of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-off series. The game was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on September 17, 2015, in North America on November 20, 2015, in Europe on February 19, 2016 and in Australia on February 20, 2016.

Why It Rocks

  1. This game fixed a bunch of issues from the previous game had. Such as the text speed now being faster, every dungeon is different and unique every floor, more Pokémon was added, etc.
  2. Like the other Mystery Dungeon games, the game takes place in a Pokémon only society, giving the Pokémon you interact with more personality.
  3. All 720 Pokémon released at the time the game was released are available.
  4. You can take the personality quiz to determine your main character's Pokémon, and if you don't like the result you can choose what Pokémon you want to play as instead.
  5. Obtaining new Pokémon is much easier than before. Missions you play each have a client, when you complete them that client joins your team automatically. There are times multiple Pokémon will join at once.
  6. The game encourages you to try different Pokémon you recruit by having the Pokémon you bring to a mission occasionally become unavailable for the next one so you can't just bring a strong team member every time.
  7. Every dungeon is redesigned each time you visit them.
  8. There are 6 different towns to visit, each having their own set of dungeons to visit.
  9. Excellent plot, including several plot twists and character betrayals that are actually surprising and unexpected.
  10. Good soundtrack. Soundtracks from the previous games are also available, many of them which got remastered.
  11. You can switch leaders between the three characters in your party while in a dungeon, meaning that you can choose to control any one of the three party members at once. If you do lose one of your characters in the party, when they faint in a dungeon, it will automatically switch to the next Pokémon.

Bad Qualities

  1. The plot, despite being excellent, is incredibly poorly paced, with the beginning to about the halfway point taking being incredibly slow and the story ending right after it gets interesting. This issue is especially glaring, because it takes six chapters to join Ampharos's guild.
  2. The Connection Orb replacing the mission system used in the previous games kills a lot of potential replay value, as the Connection Orb missions are static.
  3. The aforementioned encouragement of use of different Pokémon is obnoxious in the postgame, as it requires you to do a lot of filler missions until you can use your strongest Pokémon again to take on and recruit the Legendary Pokémon unless the main character is higher leveled than whatever you want to use.
  4. Unlike the previous Mystery Dungeon games where you can get an infinite amount of Pokémon of the same species, in this game, you can only get one Pokémon of each species and the only ones that you can get multiple of is if the Pokémon has alternate forms.
