Prince of Persia (1 and 2)
Prince of Persia is a series of kinematic platform games launched in 1989 by Broderbund and bought out in 1998 by UbiSoft due to the bankruptcy of the first company in the same year, the first part is still considered one of the most successful and important games released both for DOS and the most iconic games of the late 80's. This page focuses on the first two installments of this series.
Gameplay
In both games, the gameplay is simple, the goal is to get from one place to another, but the player's challenge is to avoid various obstacles and kill opponents. The game consists of levels and each one becomes more and more difficult.
Why They Rock
Overall
- Very solid controls for games released after the late 80's and first half of the 90's, which you can even easily get used to if you have the manual.
- Both games initially provide opportunities for an inexperienced player who, after learning the controls, will be able to overcome increasingly more difficult levels, thanks to which the gameplay does not seem repetitive thanks to increasingly more complicated levels.
Prince of Persia 1
- Impressive graphics for 1989, which were basically the maximum that a PC could generate at the time, along with incredibly smooth animations based on recordings of real human jumps.
- This game received a great remake in 2007 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Android and iOS (Java) titled: Prince of Persia: Classic.
- Quite catchy music, especially the one from the menu.
Peince of Persia 2
- This installment of the series has a much more extensive plot than the previous installment and is faithful to its previous installment.
- The graphics, although hardly an improvement over the previous game, are still good and detailed for 1993.
- The setting of the game is variable, sometimes you fight on the roofs, sometimes on the road and sometimes in a cave, faithfully reflecting the atmosphere of antiquity.
Bad Qualities
Overall
- For more modern gamers, the gameplay hasn't aged well, especially since it can be hard for them to get used to.
Prince of Persia 2
- The SNES port is terrible, and even almost unplayable.
Reception
Both of those game received a critical acclaim from critics and gamers and they're also considered as some of the best games of all-time.
