Puzzle & Dragons Gold is a spinoff of the 2012 gacha game Puzzle & Dragons, based on the Puzzle & Dragons X anime, released in January 14, 2020 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Why It’s Burned Out

  1. Puzzle & Dragons was a gacha franchise that was able to succeed on making two console spinoffs, those two being X and the Super Mario Bros. Edition which were both decent. However, this one on the Nintendo Switch ends up being worse than the previous two, as it butchers what made the original mobile gacha game good. Furthermore, this game is only playable in handheld mode and not in docked mode as it requires the touchscreen to actually play.
    • While Azur Lane Crosswave, the previous attempt on making a standard game based on a gacha IP was average/mediocre at best, it at least retained the charm of its original gacha IP, which this one does not.
  2. The game’s production value is poor, making it feel like a cash grab game that was made in less than a year;
    1. The transparent character portraits used in battle look like they were superimposed on screen via a video editor such as Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere.
    2. The story has non-existent voice acting except for occasional grunts/exclamations, and many of the visual novel-style effects look like they could be done with PowerPoint, such as how characters slide in from left or right in 60fps.
  3. No Europe release for unknown reasons, which meant that the audience for this game was going to be even more limited, as the game was primarily only released in Japan and in the US.
  4. Mediocre graphics that's looks like an enhanced of 3DS version.
  5. Short length/lack of content: The game is very short, as there’s only eight main battles and 20 different CPU teams. To artificially pad out the amount of content this game has, it features a gacha system and over 100 monsters to begin with. The lack of content combined with the fact that this game tries to squeeze more playable characters than it knows how to deal with only serves to try to appeal to this game’s competitive features, but because this game failed commercially, online competitive multiplayer can’t save it.
  6. Building and raising characters like in the original gacha game is ruined by the fact that each monster/character comes pre-maxed out, therefore making teambuilding the only thing you can do with them. There are only 21 leader characters which they are recognized as being on the battlefield unlike the sub characters which are simply put invisible and only seen on character portraits.
  7. The game has a gacha system much like it's original gacha counterpart. Aside from unlocking new teams via progressing through the game’s short story, you also have the option of summoning new monsters to build your own custom teams. The problem with this is that it doesn't help with this game's huge short length and lack of replay value at all.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Despite the poor production value, there are no bugs or glitches that can ruin the gameplay experience at all.
  2. The graphics, while mediocre, is still decent.
  3. Thankfully, this port doesn't have microtransactions.

Reception

Puzzle & Dragons Gold received negative reception from critics and players, gaining a 42 "generally unfavorable reviews" on Metacritic, with criticism for its short length, lack of content, and how it lacked the charm of the original mobile game it was based on.
