Rainbow Bubblegem (Korean: 레인보우 버블젬; Chinese: 我的同学是美人鱼) is a South Korean-Chinese magical girl CGI-animated television series produced by Campfire Aniworks and EBS in South Korea and co-produced by Tencent Video and Live Fun in China.
Synopsis
Princess Purple's secret identity is endangered, she transforms into a human while the other princesses face challenges.
Why It Rocks
- The theme of Magical Girls with a Mermaid theme is an awesome idea.
- The CGI is top notch, thanks to Unreal Engine, the software not only for making games, but also for animation.
- The action scenes are epic to watch.
- The designs of the characters are very cute, even for the Fairy Pets, humans, and of course, the main antagonist, Black Diamond, who has an extremely attractive design, both in her human and villain form.
- The main characters all have their own different, unique personality:
- Purple Star is the upbeat and friendly girl who loves making new friends, and she's very curious about many things. She also has a passion for exploring new places. Although she might not be the smartest of the 7 and can be quite irresponsible and clumsy, she still makes a great protagonist and capable leader, hoping to become the next Guardian of the Sea. She comes from the Starfish Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Pink Star.
- Red Ruby is the girliest of the 7, who is very confident. However, she can be very concerned about her appearance, and her confidence can lead to her being spoiled, arrogant, and condescending at times, mostly towards Purple. Despite her short temper and hatred of humiliation, she is very sweet and caring to those who she trusts the most. She comes from the Seahorse Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Heartcon.
- Orange Amber is the kind and adorable girl who is normally upbeat and optimistic much like Purple, and she loves to bake, specifically sweet desserts. Although she can get emotional, anxious, and insecure sometimes, as well as very dependent on her mother, Orange can hardly do things on her own rather than relying on others to get the job done for her. However, thanks to her kindness, she is quick enough to toughen up and jump into action when she notices her friends are in trouble. She comes from the Sea Anemone Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Monet.
- Yellow Gold is the shyest of the 7, who is normally silent and very reserved and talks with people she's close to, mostly with her magical pet Shailam. Despite her shyness, when she decides to open herself more to others, Yellow is shown as very sweet and caring, who is willing to help those who need her; however, this can be taken advantage of by those with bad intentions. She comes from the Seashell Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Shailam.
- Green Leaf is the smart one and known for being the most intelligent of the 7. Despite her coldness towards others, once someone gets to know her, she has a warm heart. She comes from the Stingray Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Stings.
- Blue Sapphire is the bravest and strongest of the 7 with a love for sports, making her a fitting tomboy member of the group for the show. Although she has an obsession with winning, she likes competing fairly. She's also very energetic, fast, and extremely lively when compared to the others. However, Blue can have a harsh behavior due to her excessively competitive spirit, but it doesn't stop her from showing her loyalty and valuing her friendship with her teammates. She comes from the Jellyfish Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Jellyfin.
- Indigo Keen is the naturally laidback and quite mysterious of the 7. Despite this, she is very hostile and untrustworthy towards others. Ever since she was the sole survivor of her kingdom's destruction from Black Dia, Indigo carries a huge amount of trauma. Because of this, she pushes people away from her. Deep down, however, Indigo is a good friend and tries to help out in any way she can. She came from the Sea Urchin Kingdom, and her Guardian Spirit is Prickle.
- Interesting plot. There are even some episodes that have darker themes in terms of the plot, like Indigo's tragic backstory as explained above.
- Black Diamond is considered to be a very interesting and threatening villain. She also has a tragic backstory where she and Alex had a close relationship when they first met as Black Dia wanted to learn more about the human world; afterwards, when Alex gave Black Dia a donut as she thought it was a bracelet, they both laughed, and he even supported her to become the next ruler of the sea. However, after the ceremony where Black Dia became ruler of the sea and went to pay Alex a visit, Alex started to betray her by making his friends capture her, causing Black Dia to flee away from the human world. As a result, she became evil.
- As of now, Rainbow Bubblegem is also one of the very few shows that managed to escape a single bad episode, with the only exception being "Bluetok Star". (See BQ#4)
- The transformations are also awesome too, with the music being a real banger.
- Some interesting features in these shows:
- The battles against the Blobs, a devil force created by Black Dia.
- As the Blobs get defeated, they're getting a gem to rank up into princesses. While all of them are not reaching it to the queen, she still to fight against them in the next season.
- Phenomenal voice acting, especially in the Indonesian dub.
- The theme song while some of them are forgettable, it's still catchy to hearing it.
Bad Qualities
- The title can sound embarrassingly cheesy for some people.
- While the plot is good, it's somewhat filler, making the pacing is really slow to get through.
- It kind of ripped off Mermaid Melody Pichi-Pichi due to the Magical Girls with a Mermaid theme.
- "Bluetok Star" is considered to be the weakest episode by far.
- While the characters are likeable, there are some characters that can be a little unlikable sometimes, such as Red and Indigo due to their respective negative attitudes.
- While the transformations are awesome, they get repetitive very quickly with the same scenes over and over again.
- The show ended on a cliffhanger.
- Thankfully, the studio says that they will be working on a new season in the future.
- As of now, the series doesn't have US access or an English Dub yet, but time may vary.
- Thankfully, they had leaked this dub via Mongolian voice-over, so it's possible that the dub was considering completion but still has yet to be released.
- Despite the great voice acting, the voice acting in the English dub can be ear-grating for some people, especially when it comes to Purple Star's voice.
Reception
This show is received positive reviews by critics and fans, especially for Indonesia, where this country is most popular and most watched in the Indonesian television history. It was praised for its great CGI Animation, good voice actors, especially for Indonesian dubs, good character development, and interesting backstory, despite the pacing of the show is slow.
It's so good, that the rating of viewers is high, even for fans love this show.
The show currently sits at a rating of 8.4/10 on IMDb, with 97% of Google users liking the series.
